It's that time of year again. The birds are starting to chirp, the flowers are beginning to bloom, and people are starting to day dream about summer. The realization that summer is just around the corner brings about a whole lot of excitement with a tiny hint of dread. It's time to whip your body back into shape. What girl doesn't start freaking out about having a bikini flat stomach or tank top arms once the warm weather comes around? Sure, it can be stressful, but it's nothing to freak out about. If getting in shape for summer is really that important to you, follow a few steps and you'll be well on your way.
1. Set goals (not just weight).
Trying to lose 10 pounds might be harder than you think. Instead of worrying about the number on the scale, worry about the progress you're making. Try to run five miles without stopping by the end of your first month working out. Or do five more sit ups each day until you can do 100 at a time. These small goals will take you further than you think.
2. Keep a food journal.
Mindless eating is a problem everyone deals with. We all grab a handful of chips every time we walk through the kitchen if they're out. Writing down everything you put in your mouth will make a huge difference, forcing yourself to think about it forces you to gain a little more self control.
3. Do more than just cardio.
Yes, running is great. But it's not the only exercise you need to tone your body. Make sure you are doing exercises that will target your abs, arms and back as well. A 30 minute balanced workout is far more effective than 30 minutes on the treadmill, I promise.
4. Set a routine.
Have class from nine until one? Wake up and go at seven, start going after your last class or go right before you go to bed. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you aim to go to the gym around the same time every day. Falling into a set routine will make you feel more obligated to go.
5. Portion control.
Eating healthy is always a good start, but it's about so much more than that. Eating healthy isn't going to be effective if you're eating three filets of salmon and an entire package of green beans. Limit your portions. Every food is okay in moderation.
6. Move more.
It's okay if you aren't able to make it to the gym every day. You aren't superhuman. But try to move as much as possible. Walk to class instead of drive. Park in the furthest parking spot available. Always take the stairs. If you find yourself sitting on the couch for an extended period of time, get up and go for a walk. You don't need to be a gym rat to stay healthy.
7. Don't be too hard on yourself.
Don't let the idea of losing weight consume you. Getting healthy is a great goal, but if you're doing it for the wrong reasons, the results might be disappointing and unhealthy. Don't get frustrated and be patient. Remember, health isn't about the weight you lose, it's about the life you gain.
