My very first job was working in a small restaurant as a waitress. This experience taught me more about life than any other. We gained loyal regulars that knew us by name and they expected us to be there for them everyday. I believe everyone should work in the restaurant business at least once in their life to learn these important lessons.
1. Patience is key. People are going to take their time and never realize you're in a rush.
2. No matter how bad the joke is, you must always laugh. Oh, it's not like I haven't heard that joke before from you last week.
3. Customers seem to know more about the restaurant than you. They are not hesitant to critique your performance.
4. Teamwork makes the dream work. When you help another co-worker out, they will return the favor in time of need.
5. Always be on the cook's good side. They can help you when you forget to put in an order, or if your table is complaining.
6. If there is ever a problem, always get your manager. Never try to settle customer quarrels yourself, managers are key to solving problems.
7. Always leave a good tip at a restaurant. Servers work hard for their money, and if you don't have enough money for a tip then you should go out to eat.
8. Never reveal your true emotions to the customers. Waitresses have mastered the art of the fake smile.
9. Know the menu inside and out, people are going to drill you with questions. Ask the cooks about what the specials are before starting your day so you're well prepared.
10. Good service can be rewarded. Customers can surprise you with an amazing tip on any day.
11. You will drop or spill something in front of or on the customers. Don't worry about it, it happens to literally all of us.
