With the presidential election finally over, we start to ask ourselves "well now what". Truth is, I don't even know what to do next, but in this time of pain, sorrow, and even fear, we should all stick together and remember that we are not alone. There are thousands of other people feeling the same way you are at this very moment so let's just take this step by step.
1. Take A Deep Breath
I am personally the type that hated when people posted “Well it doesn’t matter who wins…”, no it did matter, it does matter, and it always will. But, it’s done with and now we should just take time to breathe. We owe that to ourselves.
2. Be Proud of Yourself
For many many people, including myself, this was the first time we got to actually vote. Even though this was nothing like what we may have pictured it to be, pat yourself on the back because your voice was heard. It is still a big deal!
3. Cry
I broke down in one of my classes because it was just way too much for me. And, that’s okay. It is a very difficult time for my family, friends, and I, but together we will all get through this.
If you are religious or believe in the power of prayer, say one. I am a firm believer myself that prayers go along way. Pray for someone else if you can. I’m sure they would appreciate that too. I think that most importantly, this country needs a prayer.
I think this is a perfect time to show your family and friends your support. Let them know that they’re not alone. Give them a big big hug, because chances are you need it just as much as they do. We don’t know what is coming, but we should just brace ourselves.
6. Love Yourself
If you are a woman, like myself, remind yourself that Trump’s views do not define who we are. We should love who we are, what we will become, and what we will do. Self love is so important. We cannot let him or anyone bring us down. We are not perfect, but we certainly aren’t less. If you are Black, know that your life does matter. If you are Muslim, you are not a terrorist. If you are an immigrant, this is your home. If you are Mexican, you are not a rapist. If you are part of the LGBT community, love will always win, and I love you.
This election has been going on for what seems to be like forever! Grab a couple of friends and go out and have a drink (if you are of age that is) or watch a whole season of your favorite show on Netflix (I'll probably do this one). It will take your mind off of this stressful week, at least for a bit. You deserve it.
