While many people tend to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of having a sibling, there is also a small population of people who are the only children in their family. Here are some common occurrences that all people without siblings can relate to.
1. There are two reactions you get from people when you tell them you are an only child
“Aw, that is so sad,” or “Wow, you are SO lucky!” Most people you meet have brothers or sisters, and depending on whether they hate or love their siblings, they will either pity you or envy you.2. Instantly bonding with anyone else who is an only child
“You’re an only child?! I am too!”3. Not having to argue with another person over what to watch on television
While most of your friends complained about how they have to compromise with their sibling(s), you got to binge-watch your favorite shows to your heart's content. Also, no one else to complain if you changed the channel every two minutes because you just can’t make up your mind about what to watch.
4. Not having to share toys/electronics/ or food, etc.
While others usually spent their childhood having to split everything between one or more siblings, you always got to have everything to yourself.
5. Always being asked why your parents only decided to have one kid
This is always an awkward question, and not one you really want to dwell on for too long, so just nod, smile and say, “I'm not really sure.”
6. Being infinitely closer with your parents than most children
While there are probably exceptions to this, I've noticed that only children tend to be extremely close with their parents as a result of the fact that there is no one else you have to share the limelight with, and also since your parents are the only other people you share the house with when you don't have siblings.
7. Having people say to you, “wow, you must be spoiled!”
Well, duh.
