As my sophomore year of college approaches, I thought I'd share everything and everyone I was grateful for my freshman year. I also hope that this will serve as a piece of advice for incoming freshman to let them know you aren't really on your own when you have a great environment filled with great people. So, here it goes, 8 things I was thankful for my freshman year.
1. My Dorm Friends/Roommate
Freshman year, everyone is away from family for the first time. Everyone is vulnerable to sadness and feelings of loneliness, but luckily I had the best people to be surrounded by this time. Shoutout to my roomie, my neighbors, and everyone that lived in the 3rd floor hallway (Sherley sweeties forever!!) without y'all, my freshman year wouldn't have been half as great. Thanks for all the late night talks, letting me borrow random things I didn't have, going to do laundry with me when I didn't want to walk down to the basement alone, and always being steps away when I needed someone to chill with.
2. Great Professors
I've had some great professors and some not so great professors my freshman year. This is a shoutout to the professors that helped guide me through the mess that was freshman year. To my history professor, I only took this class for the credit but little did I know how much I would end up loving history and it became my favorite class. He opened up my eyes to a rich understanding of the past and I will never forget his passion while teaching. To my Chinese professor, I wish more people would take Chinese to see how amazing of a person you are. You cared for every student deeply and I appreciated your patience so much. I know I can rely on these professors and I'm glad I found trust in them and I hope everyone can have this same feeling!
3. "Class is canceled"
With great professors comes long nights of work and class time, but nothing beats that email you wake up to say "Class is canceled." You have been studying and doing work all night, not wanting to wake up in a couple hours for your morning class, but attendance is mandatory so you can't skip so you think you can fight through it. However, that blessing comes to your phone which is an email from your professor saying class is canceled and you just want to thank everyone; thanks, mom and dad, my dog, God, TCU... etc.
4. Late Night Food Delivery
I can't count how many times pizza has come in clutch during those late nights of studying. Pizza was a great pick me up from all of our studying. When you are locking yourself up in your dorm or in the library, food delivery was always the answer. Even if it is past midnight, don't fret because Topper's Pizza is open until 3 am! Never underestimate what good food can do for you while you are super stressed out.
5. Coffee
If you don't consume coffee (or any type of caffeine) then WYD? Coffee has been there for me during those late nights and early mornings. Coffee has been my ultimate sidekick throughout my late study sessions, long classes, and long meetings. So thank you to coffee for ultimately getting me through these long days. Who knows how I would've acted without it??
6. My Family
You're away from your family, but they will always be your biggest supporters. My mom never failed to send me endless care packages that were something so small yet so meaningful. I could call my parents just to ask a question but would end up talking with them for hours. My parents would sometimes drop me off my favorite home cooked meals or my comfort foods which would, in turn, boost my morale so far up. My siblings would visit me, take me out to dinner and what not too. My family is my biggest support system and I'm thankful for them helping me get through my first year of college.
7. My Sorority
I already wrote about my sorority, but I always just have to thank them again for being forever amazing. Through my sorority, I felt so welcomed on campus and it's like I have real family attending university with me. We studied together, ate together, hung out together; I never had a dull or meaningless moment with them. Thank you to Kappa Lambda Delta for making me feel at home and safe at all times of college!
8. TCU
Texas Christian University, I love you! For your beautiful campus, your prime location, and your great educational opportunities. TCU cares for each and every one of its' students and you can tell that there is always someone there if you have any sort of issue. The people of TCU are the definition of Southern Hospitality. Thank you TCU for being the best and I look forward to the rest of my years here.
