5 Reasons Why I Love My Cultural Sorority
Tamara Ngyuen

Upon my arrival at the beautiful and great Texas Christian University, I was bombarded with the question “Are you going to rush?!” For those unfamiliar with this term, “rush” means the process of joining a sorority or fraternity. I never really thought of the sorority life to be for me, frankly because I rarely saw anyone that looked like me. Basically, TCU was 3% Asian and I didn’t want to lose my identity any further. So, I opted out of the norm and didn’t rush a Panhellenic sorority. Instead, I went to the Activities Fair in hopes of finding a cultural organization I could really identify with, and to my amazement, I found the perfect organization, a sorority, I could happily be a partof: Kappa Lambda Delta Sorority, Inc.

1. You are surrounded by amazing and unique women

To me, being surrounded by people I can culturally identify with is a huge deal. By joining Kappa Lambda Delta, I found sisters who I can be myself around and who will understand all (or most of) my quirks! You meet amazing girls that come from all different backgrounds and majors. I am so undeniably happy that I met each and every one of these girls!

2. You ALWAYS have someone to hang with

Attending college is a huge jump; you are away from your home and your family, and chances are you don't know anyone before coming to university. Joining KLD became my home away from home. I quickly became best friends with all my sisters within the first month of joining. It was the first week after joining and I was already texting all my line sisters* asking if any of them wanted to get lunch or study with me in the library. (line sisters= a girl pledging the sorority at the same time as you) (Taken at our sistersgiving Thanksgiving dinner where all of our sisters and some alumni came together and brought food and just enjoyed a night of being together :) )

3. There are always fun, cultural events to celebrate

Each year, Kappa Lambda Delta hosts an event to celebrate Lunar New Year. Lunar New Year is a huge holiday that many Asian households celebrate. Since it is such a big deal to Asian families, we try to celebrate it with some more people at TCU by hosting an event! It is a fun way to celebrate your culture with other people!

4. You will make memories that will last a lifetime

When I recall my freshman year, it is no surprise to me that probably 90% of my best experiences involved my sisters. "Do you remember that one time we went to KBBQ?" Okay, we probably went to eat Korean BBQ like 50 times, but each and every experience is distinct. We spend so much time together that if any of my friends outside of my sorority are looking for me, they can safely assume I am with my sisters. We eat together, we study together, we have sleepovers where we don't go to sleep until 3 a.m. despite the fact that we have to volunteer at 5 am the next day. (Taken at a volunteer event where we woke up at 5 a.m. to volunteer for a run)

5. You will have sisters that will last longer than a lifetime

Because of how our sorority is smaller than others, I believe we are more close knit. I know each and every one of my sisters so personally and deeply; we know all of our alumni as well. If we ever need anything, we know we can always count on each other. There are so many instances where we all have dropped everything we are doing and ran to our car to pick each other up whenever someone else needed help. That is the kind of sisterhood that Kappa Lambda Delta has and I am proud to be a part of it and would never trade it for anything else.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
