1. Time management.
Between pledge meetings, social events and philanthropy events on top of your regular coursework, you’ll learn to use the time that you do have more efficiently and have more productive days. In my opinion, time management is the greatest skill that a college student can possess.
2. How to dress professionally.
You’d be surprised how many people don’t even know the basics such as how to tie a tie and it boggles my mind. Over the weeks of pledging, you’ll be dressing up and need to look professional at all times. Pledging prepares you for life after college and you’ll never land a job with your top button unbuttoned or not having your tie tied properly.
3. 15 minutes early is on time and on time is late.
Once you graduate, you’re going to have to be on time for work meetings and the consequences will be a lot more severe than they are now if you’re not on time so you might as well pick up this habit now.
4. The Greek alphabet.
You’ll probably know it better than your ABC’s. Similarly, you’ll probably know the founding fathers better than your own name.
5. You’re only as strong as your weakest link.
No matter how skillful one of your pledge brothers may be, the group is only as strong as the weakest link. Just like pledging, you must always be reminded to help out your weakest link in your personal and professional life.
6. Your pledge class is the brotherhood within the brotherhood.
No matter what you need, your pledge brothers will have your back for life. Chances are, they’ll even be in attendance at your wedding someday.
7. Initiation night is the best night of your life.
Chances are pledging is the biggest commitment you’ve ever made in your entire life to this point. If you were able to stick it out for this many weeks, then you’ve proven to yourself that you can achieve what you set out to do and you’re a better man because of it.
