When working at a daycare you definitely learn a lot of different things. From dirty diapers to favorite toys, it's not hard to fall into the routine that fifteen babies need you to follow. Each one with a different personality, they're my favorite human beings and they've taught me more about childcare then I ever could have learned in any classroom.
1. How to Properly Warm a Bottle
When warming bottles for babies you definitely do not microwave the milk. You have to microwave water and then let the bottle sit in the hot water. This way you avoid making scalding milk and microwaving plastic. They also make bottle warmers, but we're not that fancy at the daycare.
2. How to Juggle Multiple Things at Once
I'd say this is a skill I improved on by working in a daycare. There are many days when I find myself feeding one kid cheerios, while giving a bottle to another baby, and kicking a ball back and forth with another. It becomes second nature after a while though.
3. How to Change a Poop Explosion Diaper
You better put on some gloves and prepare yourself for a trying task because when a baby poops up their back, all over the place you're in for a challenge. I've had my fair share of poop explosions and though it is still time consuming, it's not as hard as it used to be. It will probably be a lot easier in my own home one day, when I can just through my kid in the bath.
4. How to Understand Baby Gibberish
I know exactly what those kids are talking about even when they're making no sense. It's pretty hilarious sometimes actually.
5. Children's Songs
I have learned just about every kids song now from hearing them on repeat. I often find myself randomly thinking of one and then I just shake my head. If I'm being honest, my favorite is "Down By The Bay".
6. How to Get a Baby to Sleep
The cry and they cry and they cry because they'll absolutely exhausted, but they don't want to go to sleep. I've learned how to get each baby to sleep, whether they need to be rocked in your arms, whether they like being hummed to, whether they need to be rocked in the crib, or whether they need a pacifier or not. With a lot of hard work, sometimes an hour even, I can usually get them to sleep even when they fight it.
