Shout out to all incoming freshman, how are you doing out there kid? You scared to be hundreds of miles from home? You’ll get used to it, and you’ll love it. The freedom is honestly nothing comparable to your usual 11 o’clock curfew, and you’ll probably overdo it but hey, what else are you here for, an education? I mean kind of, but you’re really here to have the best next 4 years of your life. If you’re living in a dorm, or some other form of housing on campus, you will get package slips probably very often. And when you get that slip in your mailbox, it’s almost like God mailed you a one-way ticket to heaven.

Wow, care packages, so heavenly. These so called “care packages” are sent to you from basically anyone who knows you are crying in your dorm right now because you aren’t ready to adult but have to. You wrote them a list of what you wanted before you even left home and they listened. What are college kids’ favorite care package goodies? These:

1. Food

Literally anything guys, the food here is equivalent to dog sh*t. Preferably something homemade that will still be yum when we get it, like homemade cookies. But obviously packaged snacks are the easy way to go, hell you can even send ramen.

2. Stuffed animals

We have a million at home that we left behind, and brought the other one million with us. We don’t sleep with them because we’re too old for that, but they’re cute enough to show off on our Snapchat stories okay?

3. Cards with money inside of them (otherwise we don’t care)

Hand written notes or Hallmark cards are always really nice to display on our desks. It’s a really good piece of motivation while we studying to glance over at and remember why we are there slaving away our brains.

4. Gift cards

Again, any one will do, but we have preferences for sure. Places like Dominos, Starbucks, Dunkin’ Doughnuts, McDonald’s and so on. You know what it is.

5. Expensive essentials that we cannot afford

It’s the little things you know, the little things that cost a freaking arm and a leg. Command hooks, batteries, razors, makeup… I could go on and on.

6. Room decorations

Things to hang on the walls so we feel at home, like string-lights.

7. Holiday gifts

Holiday themed packages are literally the best. Luckily we get sent home for the big holidays to be with you all, but the little ones that we are away for, even the ones we don’t really care about… We still want gifts. Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, St. Patrick’s Day, Leaf-Erikson Day, etc.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
