Curly hair is a gift, and I don’t think a lot of other people understand that. Growing up, I always hated my hair and I wanted to have straight hair like the other girls, but then I realized curly hair is what made me special. Not everybody has it. Another cool thing about curly hair is that there are all different types. You can have anything from tiny ringlets to beachy waves, and they are all beautiful. There are a lot of things that people say to us curly haired girls that we’re tired of hearing, but here’s just a few of them.
1. “Is your hair naturally like that?”
Ummm.. yes? If it wasn’t, do you really think I would take the time to curl my hair every day?
2. “How do you brush it?”
It’s not that hard. You just brush your hair when it’s wet. It took me forever to learn this. When I was in middle school, my mom would try to brush my hair and it would become a frizzy mess. It was not a good time.
3. “You look so pretty with straight hair!
...So I don’t look pretty with curly hair?
4. “How long does it take to straighten your hair?”
Hours. Too many hours.
5. “You should straighten your hair more often!”
Why would I hide my natural gift? Do you know how much time and money girls spend on curling irons in order to get the same look as us? We’d much rather be going around flaunting our curls than spending hours in the bathroom with a straightening iron.
6. “It must take forever to do your hair.”
Actually, it’s a lot quicker. Personally, my routine is that I shower at night, brush my hair, scrunch it with gel, then braid it before bed. In the morning, I take out the braids and voila! Beautiful curls! It only takes less than five minutes of my morning. No blow drying or straightening required. I know other people with curly hair just shower in the morning and then blow dry their hair with a diffuser, but that's just a personal choice. Everyone's hair is different. For a girl with thick, curly hair, I don't have the time to blow dry my hair in the morning, let alone blow dry it at all.
7. “I would hate to have curly hair.”
Yes, curly hair can be annoying for many reasons. I can name so many times where my hair would get caught in something in public. It also gets tangled a lot easier, but that’s what detangler is for. It can also be frizzy, especially in the summer, but if you have the right hair products, you can easily prevent frizz. Curly hair is so beautiful, and I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to have it.
Like I said before, there are a lot of comments that we get about our curly hair, but the one thing we don’t hear enough is that our hair is beautiful. To all of the curly haired girls out there: embrace it!
