7 Things Catholic School Girls Know To Be True

Attending an all-girls Catholic high school is a unique experience. One that you can only truly understand if you have been through it. Going to an all-girls Catholic high school was strange at times, but I would not trade those four years for the world. Sometimes I miss waking up, automatically knowing what I am going to wear, and heading out the door. There are many pros and cons to Catholic high school, a uniform was definitely a pro.

Here is a list of what all former (and current) all-girls Catholic school students understand:

1. The art of skirt rolling.

This is something you learn before you even walk down the hallway on your first day of school. There is a skill that you acquire upon entering the building. It entails being able to roll your skirt without it being noticeable. If you are lucky, your school is not strict on their skirt length policy (2 inches above the knee). Most students were not lucky.

2. Messy buns are your best friend.

Not having boys in school made for some pretty interesting hairdos. I have seen every form of the messy bun, each more questionable than the next. By the time senior year rolled around it appeared that brushing your hair was optional.

3. Nuns.

This one is self explanatory. I still fear the word. No, they are not as strict as they were when my parents were in school. However, they are strict, and its their way or no way at all. They were the teachers enforcing the skirt length and no nail polish rules.

4. There is no drama.

Of course there is some drama, I mean it is a building full of high school girls . There is not nearly as much as people seem to think. For the most part, there were rarely any arguing or nasty rumors.

5. No boys.

This is the part that horrifies everyone when they find out where I went to high school. "I could never go to a school without guys" or "I don't know how you did it." It was not the end of the world. I survived and had guy friends outside of my high school. It is strange because I look back now and realize that I never dwelled on this fact.

6. Girls are gross.

Normally boys are labeled as disgusting, but spend one day in an all-girls school and you will learn that girls are equally, if not more disgusting. Burps, poop humor, dirty bathrooms ...You have seen and heard it all at an all-girls high school.

7. No topic is off limits.

Personally, my all-girls high school was small. I imagine that this is true for most of them throughout the country. We became a very close knit group of girls. There was nothing we did not openly talk about. This is a fact that was not always accepted by our teachers, but nothing stopped us.

I am sure that most Catholic school girls can relate. Despite everyone else's aversion to an all-girls school, I have to say that it was an awesome experience. One that I would never trade and it gave me some of my best friends.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
