7 Things Appalachian State Students Take For Granted

Cool aspects of the unvierstity that I often take for granted, like most of the students.

Here is a list of things that I passively appreciate about Appalachian State University (but rarely take advantage of).

1. Greenbriar Movie Theater

An oftentimes forgotten gem of ASU's campus, the Greenbriar Theater is housed in the Plemmons Student Union and frequently shows classic films, recent releases, and movies for class. The theater provides an aesthetic of a classic movie theater and for the cost of only a few bucks, any student can watch a movie.

2. Gymnasiums

The S in ASU should stand for swole because our campus has three gymnasiums, for some reason. Each corner of campus has a gym, which makes it very difficult to justify not exercising. Each gym is well-equipped with all of the elements to create a good workout.

3. Legends

The students of ASU are lucky to have an all-in-one venue associated with the campus. Legends hosts various music groups (like The Mowglis), other performers (like the poet Neil Hilborn and the best and only improv group on campus, NouN), and events (like Battle of the Bands). Like everything else in the world, an event at Legends will cost some money, but I guarantee it's worth it.

4. Food

Excluding our "wonderful" dining halls, there is a huge selection of restaurants near campus. Whatever you're craving, whatever your price range, it's not difficult to find a place to eat (unless you're just really indecisive).

5. Places to Sit

I include this in the list because ASU is a comfortable place to relax. There are plenty of options when it comes to laying around: benches, brick walls, and the grass on Sanford Mall. There's no better way to soak up a nice Boone day than laying on the grass, watching dogs, and listening to Appalachian music.

6. Coffee

Coffee is the lifeblood of most college students. Therefore, it is necessary to have options when we need to refuel. ASU and the town of Boone have at least seven coffee shops, not including restaurants where you can also grab some joe. Where else do you think we get the energy to climb mountains?

7. School Spirit

It's difficult to find someone on campus who dislikes ASU. We may complain about the weather, the uphill walks, and classes in the snow, but the school spirit of ASU is admirable. Football game days with tailgating and the Marching Mountaineers create a vibe unlike no other.

8. Clubs

No, not nightclubs. There is a large system of clubs and organizations on ASU's campus ranging from gaming clubs, intramural sports, philosophy in film, and so many more. These organizations also host regular events across campus, making sure that ASU never has a dull day.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
