College students all over the world are packing up their bags for what may seem like the longest three months of their lives. After a long week of finals, all we want to do is sit in our beds and binge watch Netflix for hours on end. But, the end of finals means that summer break is quickly approaching and it will no longer be socially acceptable to sleep in until 3:00 p.m. and avoid all responsibilities. Here are some of the struggles that college students have when they go home for the summer:
1. Going back to the old rules.
Coming home means that you are no longer the one making the rules around the house. You go from staying out until 3:00 a.m. with no consequences to having a 1:00 a.m. curfew. It's definitely a change from having complete freedom.
2. Your friends are hours away.
It's a challenge from being able to walk just minutes to see your friends to being separated from them by hours. Facetime is not the same as being able to share your latest drama face-to-face. Not being able to see them for three months makes wanting to go back to school at an all time high.
3. Questions on questions.
From relatives, parents, friends, you name it. What are you doing with your life? What's your major? Do you have a boyfriend? How are your grades? The questions seem to never have an end to them.
4. Responsibilities.
Summer in college is much different than summer in high school. Now, you have to start building your resume with jobs and internships. So much effort and so little time.
5. Chores.
It's no longer okay to leave your room a complete mess or to wait three weeks to do laundry. Coming home means cleaning up after yourself, which can often take longer than you imagined.
6. Having to ask before you go places.
In college, you have the ability to go anywhere you want without having to tell a soul. The reality hits when you go home for the summer and are asked 1,000 questions on what you're doing and where you're going.
7. Not being able to sleep in.
While away at college, there is no such thing as an alarm on the weekends. After an exhausting weekend, all we want is to sleep the day away and do nothing with our lives. Well, being home is much different because we are forced to be productive and not sleep until 3:00 p.m. every day.
Yes, there are obviously some positives of coming home from college for the summer. But it is often hard for college students because we have become so accustomed to our lifestyles at school. There are only three months until you'll be back at school for another year. So make the most of your time at home and enjoy the home cooked meals. It'll go by faster than you think!
