Moving into the dorms can be super exciting and adventurous. You gain a sense of independence, and you become excited to meet a bunch of new people. But while living on campus does have its perks, there are some downfalls that come with it. Here's a few that almost every freshman goes through.
1. Sleep isn't a real thing.
You can bet that out of the all the people on your floor, someone will knock on your door at 2 a.m. and disturb your sleep -- or even blast Natasha Bedingfield up and down the hallway for a chance to make it onto the campus Snapchat story. Either way, you're better off catching a snooze in the library.
2. Avoiding the "Freshman 15" is easier said than done.
Eventually, time will not be on your side, and you are forced to rush to Panda Express for your 15-minute break in-between classes. You think that with all the walking that you're doing, you're fine with not going to the gym. But soon you'll go home for break and realize that those jeans from last winter are a little tighter than usual.
3. Who thought that having 20 girls in one bathroom was a good idea?
There's nothing more awkward than sharing a bathroom with over 20 girls. You all have to share a limited number of stalls and showers, and soon people get attached. If you occupy another person's shower or stall, you can expect a war to start.
4. Sharing a room with a person or two, that's the size of a closet.
So maybe not the size of a closet, but pretty close. It's hard to have guests over, or even have someone spend the night, because you have your one twin bed, and a tiny bit of space to stand in. Let's also remember that you are sharing that with one, if not two, other people -- talk about getting up close and personal.
5. What is alone time?
With constantly being surrounded by people, getting some alone time is difficult. People coming to visit, running into people at Starbucks -- it almost feels like you're being followed. You then start to feel like your only escape is to actually get off of campus and hide.
6. You soon will have a personal issue with the laundry room.
Having a good experience in the laundry room is like getting a 100 percent on a chemistry exam, it honestly just doesn't happen. When the laundry room is actually functional, you can guarantee that at least one thing is bound to go wrong. You may find your wet clothes on the floor, or someone maybe stole your dryer sheets. Most of the time you can't even wash or dry your clothes because all of the machines are taken. There will always be an ongoing war between you and the laundry room.
7. Sometimes you just miss home.
While being independent is cool, sometimes you just want to go back home to your own bed and have someone do your laundry for you. The adult life isn't all that it's cracked up to be, and every now and then a little babying is needed. But don't worry, it'll only last a week, at most, before you go running back to school to get your independence back.
