With Halloween right around the corner and the recent news that the upcoming West End play, Harry Potter and the Curse Child, will be a sequel to the book series, you might be thinking about getting a Harry Potter-related costume together. Or, if you're anything like me, having one in your closet year-round is an absolute must. Regardless of the occasion or reason, these are the items you might be looking for to complete your look and the websites where you can purchase them:
1. The Wand
In the series, witches and wizards, as we know, typically purchase their wands in a Diagon Alley shop called Ollivanders, where the wand, famously, "chooses the wizard". However, those of you who are Muggles, unfortunately, don't have this resource at your disposal and are going to have to get a little creative!
If you're looking for replicas of the wands featured in the film franchise, Noble Collections and Universal Studios are your best bet. Wands designed for specific or generic characters can be purchased individually from each site for $37.50 and $39.95 respectively; however, wands that come in collections or with lighting up capabilities are priced higher.
Alivan's is another online store that you might want to consider. All of their wands are handcrafted. Some are film replicas while others are original designs. (They even allow you to custom design one!) The catch is that most of their wands are more expensive than Noble Collections' and Universal Studios' so your decision on which site you use might be dependent on your budget.
But if, after all that, you decide you don't like any of these options, this awesome tutorial will teach you how to make your own wand.
2. The House Sweater
If you're going to be a Hogwarts student, you're going to need a uniform, which the house sweater is an important aspect of. We don't have access to Madam Malkin's, unfortunately, but the Muggle World has the next best thing. Alivans carries sweaters for all four houses (Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Don't know which house you're in? Take the quiz here!) for $35.00 and I can personally vouch for their good quality.
If you would much rather make your own, Universal Studios carries house crest patches that you can sew on to any gray sweater.
3. The White Button Down Shirt
This is perhaps the easiest item to obtain on this list. You, or someone you know, probably already has one of these in your closet. But if you find yourself empty handed, check any department store.
4. The House Tie
Now that you know your house and have your sweater, your tie should be next on your list. Do you want a tie that resembles the ones worn in the first two films? Alivans has you covered. How about the ones they introduced in the Prisoner of Azkaban film? Alivans has a selection of these as well as Noble Collections (Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin) and Universal Studios (Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin). Please be sure to note that the Gryffindor ties from Alivans and Universal Studios are scarlet and gold (book accurate) while the one from Noble Collections is maroon and gold (film accurate).
5. The Uniform Trousers/Skirt
Another easy one. Basically, if your trousers or skirt is grey (to match the house sweater you just made or purchased), you're in the clear. They should both be available at any department store, but if you're unsure of where to look for the skirt in particular, this pleated one by French Toast is excellent. Additionally if you choose to wear a skirt, you might want to consider getting a pair of gray knee-high socks to go with it.
6. The House Robe
If you're willing and have the means to drop some cash, get a house robe; if you don't, your costume will be more than fine without it. The cheapest robes come from Universal Studios (Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin) at $109.95 while Alivans sells them for $119.00 (Hufflepuff, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Slytherin).
7. Accessories
Like the house robe, accessories aren't necessary, but they are an option that you might want to consider if they fit into your budget. Alivans, Universal Studios, and Noble Collections each sell an array of accessories that include scarves, socks, gloves, prop replicas and more! If you're dressing up as Harry Potter himself, you might want to get yourself a pair of round specs to top if off.
And there you have it. Good luck assembling your costume! If you already have one, be sure to tell us about it in the comment section below.
