Winter break is a time of mixed emotions, a roller-coaster lasting six whole weeks. It's a time where you try to conjure up all the money you could possibly make as a waiter for a few weeks so you can spend it all when you get back. Here're the X stages of winter break:
Stage 1: Excitement
You hand in your last final, you pack your last sweater, and you run out to your car. You cannot wait to get home, sit on your a** for six weeks, and not have a stress in the world. "This is going to be great!"
Stage 2: Laundry
Ah, yes, it is a stage because it feels like it takes years. You put off doing your laundry for weeks at school to come home to a bottomless pit of crop tops and yoga pants. The only down time you get is the hour it takes in the dryer.
Stage 3: Food Coma
This is my favorite stage. No more food court food or (gross) concoctions I make with whatever I can find in the fridge and finally some home cooked meals. My dad makes the best breakfast and my mom the most delicious dinners. This stage makes me never want to go back.
Stage 4: Sleep
You finally have your own bed back, tons of blankets, and heat that's above the minimum your landlord makes you set it at. You can catch up on all the sleep you missed during finals week, and the rest of the semester, with no alarms for your 8 a.m. Life is good in this stage.
Stage 5: Denial
This stage usually sets in around the first Friday night. It starts to get closer to 9 p.m. and you begin to pick out your perfect going-out outfit. You pull out your phone and go to your group message with your college bffs and it hits you- there are no parties tonight. The only thing you got going on is a hot date with Netflix, and if you're lucky, your mom will join you.
Stage 6: Boredom
It finally hits- you've been enjoying doing nothing for about a week or two when one day you wake up and want to be, oh I don't know, a functioning member of society. Of course there is nothing to ever do in your hometown and all you want to do is run around your college town with your friends like always. You pass the time by counting down the minutes until you go back.
Stage 7: Excitement
Aaaaaand we're back! New Years has passed, it's getting into late January and you are ready to get back to school. The group message starts back up with plans for your big reunion and you start to get restless. As great as winter break was to be a real person again for a few weeks, you're ready to get back to your dysfunctional college self.
Don't forget to cherish your time off and how wonderful your parents treat you, you'll be back to school in no time.
