Songs are essentially poems that are sung, often with music. Sometimes songs don’t have an important message to send, while other times they have stories to tell and a message they are trying to get across. Certain songs can be related to your own life, while others make you imagine things about other people’s lives. Here are some songs that make you think about… well, something.
“Don’t Blink”- Kenny Chesney
A lot of Kenny Chesney’s songs can make you very reminiscent. “Don’t Blink” is one of them. It reminds you that life goes by really fast and that you never know what tomorrow will bring, so it is important to absorb every moment and appreciate everyone and everything in your life.
“Born In The USA”- Bruce Springsteen
This is one of the most popular misinterpreted songs. Many people think that it is celebrating the U.S. due to its catchy tune, but really it is talking about the poor treatment of American veterans of the Vietnam War and all of the negative effects that the war had on them. If you really pay attention to the lyrics, it gives you a completely different perspective than it would if you only listened to the chorus. This makes the fact that Ronald Reagan used this song for his campaign pretty darn funny.
“Trailer Hitch”- Kristian Bush
“Trailer Hitch” reminds you that sometimes less is more. It tells you that it should not be your life’s goal to be rich but to be happy and that it is better to give than receive. After all, he’s “never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch.”
“Just Breathe”- Pearl Jam
I find this song to be very calming. To me, Pearl Jam is trying to say that we should live without worrying about the inevitability of death and to remember to love. It’s also a love song in a way.
“Imagine”- John Lennon
What if we all just got along and we didn’t insult each other and try to kill each other? Hmm. If only.
“Stuck In A Moment You Can’t Get Out Of”- U2
Based on a conversation Bono wished he had had with his friend before he committed suicide, the lyrics are almost a little harsh, but they ring true. “It’s just a moment, this time will pass,” Bono sings in the closing line. No matter how bad things may be, they will get better.
“What A Wonderful World”- Louis Armstrong
“What A Wonderful World” reflects on the beauty of the world. Armstrong’s soothing voice and the imagery in the lyrics go together like honey and tea, and it is impossible to imagine anyone hating this song.
Sometimes when we listen to songs we forget to pay attention to the lyrics, but the lyrics are often the most important part of a song and shouldn’t be blown off so easily. The next time you listen to a song, really pay attention to the lyrics and think about how they make you feel.
