Deforestation is one of the well known but commonly ignored environmental issues that plagues our world. The majority of this destruction comes as a result of products and practices which are central to modern life, and thus their negative effects are easily swept under the rug in the face of consumer demand. An area the size of Manhattan is cut down in the Indonesian Rainforest every two or three days, and one of the worst contributors to this destruction is the palm oil industry, which provides an important ingredient in many snack foods. Due to the importance of consumer consideration in changing how products are sourced, here are seven snacks which source their ingredients from the Indonesian Rainforest.
1. Hershey's
Although the company has made moderate strides to investigate its sourcing of palm oil, Hershey's kisses and bars still contain the deadly substance and no end is in sight.
2. Chips
Having no plans to alter its current streak of annihilation through the rainforest, chips like Doritos and Lay's contain the palm oil coming straight from our earth's sacred places. This is especially true of chips from non-Western countries, due to certain distribution practices.
3. Peanut Butter
Don't run away screaming, yet. Not all peanut butter, particularly neither special brands nor those deemed "organic," has palm oil, but many of the mainstream brands such as Skippy's do.
4. Mac and Cheese
Macaroni and Cheese, particularly from Kraft, has a large amount of palm oil in it. Perhaps it is time to reconsider that childhood favorite of ours.
5. Chicken Noodle Soup
The soup staple, especially from its ubiquitous producer Campbell's, not only uses palm oil from the rainforest, but the palm oil it contains often is collected by horribly treated workers who have their rights violated daily. Avoid.
6. Ramen Noodles
That sauce that you know is killing you is also killing the planet. The company Toyo Suisan that produces many of the major ramen brands does not even claim to collect palm oil inline with the human rights of its workers or the sustainability of the planet.
7. Mars Bars
The American staple happens to also be contributing to the destruction of our planet. You probably didn't need the chocolate anyway.
