This father's day, I knew I wanted to write something for my dad since his birthday was also on Friday. Between my parents, I definitely have more in common with him than my mom, and I always joke that as I get older, I'm becoming more and more like him. Here are 7 signs that, like me, you may be growing up to be just like your father:
1. When you're talking, you stop yourself and think "wow, I sound like my dad."
My dad has a very distinct word choice at times, and he has even been known to make up his own catch phrases. Sometimes, I'll be talking to my friends and blurt out something that sounds like it just came out of his mouth. I've noticed myself picking up his habit of using double negatives and slipping in "ain't" in random places.
2. You've started to adopt his road rage habits.
Does your dad blair the horn, swear, roll down the window and yell at people, or just slam his hands on the wheel and mutter "c'mon" when driving? Whatever it is, you're probably doing it too.
3. You find his jokes funny.
How was the camping trip? It was in tents!
Can a match box? No, but a tin can!
What do you call a fake noodle? An Impasta!
We've all heard these "dad jokes" now and then. C'mon, they're hilarious, right?
4. You've suddenly started taking naps on the couch.
I don't know about yours, but my dad can fall asleep anywhere, at anytime. I never used to be able to nap, but since I've started becoming more like my dad, I have dozed off on the couch during a movie more often.
5. You can actually jam with him in the car.
I find that dads have a very, very selective music taste. I'm not talking about those one or two songs that come on the radio that he says "have a nice beat." I mean those songs that he knows the words to and wants to hear whenever someone takes the aux. You're basically becoming him if you're able to jam with him during long car rides.
6. You can't survive without coffee.
My father has two cups before he even leaves for work in the morning! Believe it or not, I used to hate coffee, but now I can't function much in the morning without it. I don't think I'll ever drink as much as he does, though. I guess time will tell.
7. You've become a translator for him.
When my mom asks him to do something, I can reword what she says into something my dad will understand. "Simplify!" is his big motto these days. On the other hand, I can also translate his vague requests into something my mom will understand as well. Basically, I speak "dad."
In all seriousness, I want to say a massive Happy Birthday and Happy Father's day to my dad. Thank you for being the coolest, hard working, and loving dad I know. I definitely would not be who I am today without you.
