It's that time of year again and I just have to take a moment to brag on my advisor. She definitely contributes to this great college experience of mine.
Here are 7 signs you have the best advisor.
1. They answer your emails.
I've heard other students complain that their advisor won't answer their emails and I can't imagine that kind of stress. Anytime I send out an email to my advisor she answers within a day or two - in detail too!
2. They seem interested in your life outside of school.
The fact that she even remembers my name and where I'm from is the coolest thing. Before a meeting she always asks for updates on what I told her last time and how I'm doing now.
3. They act cheerful.
It can't be easy being a student advisor at a large university (or even a small one!) I can't imagine what advisors must go through or put up with. Even so, my advisor greets me with a smile and acts as if she didn't already have a day full of dealing with stressed-out college students.
4. You feel like there is no such thing as a stupid question.
It could be so intimidating to have an advisor that sits behind their desk and judges every word you say. I know I can ask my advisor about anything I don't understand and she'll happily explain it to me (no matter how common sense it might be.)
5. They help you make connections.
This is seriously the best. She finds email addresses, phone numbers and the people I need to speak to. On a couple of accounts she even made a few phone calls for me and got my foot in the door. With the stress of college life around you, this is when you appreciate your advisor the most.
6. They tell you what you need to hear.
Don't get me wrong, my advisor doesn't sugar coat what she says or tries to find the easiest path for me. She knows what needs to be done and when to do it. And when I make a suggestion, she isn't afraid to tell me what's up.
7. You feel the need to brag on them.

This isn't the only time I have bragged on my advisor. Thank goodness for her and her help!
To the other awesome student advisors: thank you for going the extra mile to make sure your students are not only pointed in the right direction but also for being kind and caring. It may seem insignificant at the time, but it is a big deal to your students.
