Don't get me wrong, I love curling up in bed and binge watching my favorite shows as well (*cough cough* Grey's Anatomy, FRIENDS, etc). However, nothing compares to crackin' open a good book and getting so invested in the plot that you can't put it down or re-reading one of your old favorites for the tenth time.
1. Reading makes you smarter, not nerdier
Did you know that, according to theguardian.com, the increased emphasis on critical reading and writing skills in schools may partly explain why students perform, on average, about 20 points higher on IQ tests than in the early 20th century?
2. Reading broadens your vocabulary
When you get to college and have a professor that only expects you to know "college words", you'll thank your lucky stars for reading that book, just because, over the summer.
3. Reading widens your analytical thinking skills
Reading helps you find patterns and broadens your comprehensive reading skills which, in turn, widens your analytical thinking skills.
4. Reading is better for your eyes
You may enjoy sitting back and watching Netflix for hours more than reading for just one, but your eyes sure don't. The bright screen and constant movement will strain your eyes, whereas reading is much easier on them.
5. Reading helps you sleep better at night
Speaking from experience, you'll sleep 10x better if you put that bright screen away and let your eyes AND brain rest a little before sleep. Businessinsider.com says that being exposed to the blue-and-white light given off by phones, laptops, and other electronic gadgets at night prevents our brains from releasing melatonin, a hormone that tells our bodies it's nighttime.
6. Reading helps relieve stress
Need I say more?
7. You'll run out of binge-worthy Netflix shows, eventually
You can run out of binge-worthy Netflix series but you can never run out of books to read.
