Most people I know look forward to summer every year, myself included. Freedom from having to do school, time to hang out with friends, gorgeous weather, beach trips, cook outs, water parks, fireworks and so many more activities. Sadly, as you grow up the entire construct of summer changes. It becomes less about fun and I'll be honest, it kinda sucks. So here is a list of reasons why summer as an adult sucks a**.
1. You spend all your time working.
It's exhausting, full-time jobs are not all they're hyped up to be. But you're an adult now, you can't afford not to be working. But wouldn't it be great if you could get paid to watch Netflix? I hear that's actually a job, I think I might be over qualified for that one.
2. Sleeping in isn't a thing.
Working means you have to wake up early. Sleeping in is anytime you don't have to wake up at 7:30 in the morning, but your sleep schedule has already adjusted to your work schedule so even if you could sleep in, you won't.
3. Beach trips are rare.
Who doesn't love lounging by a lake or an ocean? A nice cold beverage in your hand, the sand between your toes and the sun in your hair. Sounds great, right? Too bad working a full-time job makes those kind of moments few and far between.
4. Making plans is a challenge.
Chances are your friends also work and 9 times out of 10 their schedules don't usually line up with yours. If you're lucky and/or plan ahead you might be able to do something fun that's not just a spontaneous Netflix watching session.
5. You're tired all the time.
Sure, you have the freedom to do pretty much whatever you can afford to, but who has the energy for that? When I finally get a day off I can tell you all I really want to do is be a Netflix-binging, ice cream-eating, couch potato.
6. Money doesn't grow on trees.
Say things work out and you actually have free time and want to do something fun. Can you afford it? Or is all the money in your account strictly budgeting so you can pay your bills on time and not have to pay an additional late fee? Bills suck.
7. Evenings are usually a bust.
When I get home from work the likelihood that I will feel up to doing a lot is rare. Especially if it involves too much driving, or walking, or physical effort of any kind. Work is exhausting and I'm wiped out by the time I pull into my driveway.
All in all none of this sounds all that fun, but like everything, summer is what you make of it and if you set your mind to it I'm sure you can enjoy yourself at least in some way. It won't be like the carefree summers you had when you were a child, however it doesn't have to be a complete bore-fest.
