The great state of Maine is known for more than being America's easternmost state and only one syllable state. It has an amazing atmosphere, nice residents, and many notable cultural factors. Here are just 7 reasons why Maine is the best state in the United States:
1. The food
Maine is home to some amazing food. The iconic seafood is what keeps people coming back every summer. Lobster, fried shrimp, fried clams, and chowder are just a few famous Maine dishes that Mainers and tourists like to eat again and again. Maine is also famous for its blueberries. In fact, Maine accounts for 10 percent of all blueberries grown in North America. Just imagine how many killer blueberry pies and muffins are made here every year. Last, but certainly not least is the Maine Whoopie pie (also called a black moon or gob) is the go-to dessert for any Mainer. It is the official state treat and there's even a yearly "Maine Whoopie pie festival" located in the town of Dover-Foxcraft.
2. L.L. Bean
This noteworthy outdoor clothing and supplies store founded over a century ago in Freeport Maine is particularly famous for its boots, jackets, and backpacks. People from all over the state, country, and even the world can be found wearing L.L. Bean apparel. Additionally, the 16-foot tall "Bean Boot" statue located outside the original store in Freeport draws the attention of thousands of customers each year.
3. The County
Aroostook County, or "The County" for short, is Maine's largest county as well as the largest American county east of the the Rocky Mountains. This large section of northern Maine is known for its rich farm land (mostly potatoes) and kind residents. The county is quiet and very beautiful. It also borders Canada so county residents can easily visit our northern neighbor whenever they please.
4. The Pier at OOB
Old Orchard Beach (OOB) is home to many attractions but none of them are as famous as the pier. The pier was first opened in 1898 and has been a huge Maine establishment ever since. Nowadays, the pier is home to a variety of restaurants, bars and shops and offers many different kinds of entertainment throughout the summer months. The classic "Pier Fries" (although not located on the actual) are a can't miss. Old Orchard Beach would not be the same if it weren't for the pier.
5. The Old Port
The Old Port, located in downtown Portland is known for its old cobblestone streets, 19th century brick buildings, and its welcoming atmosphere. The Old Port consists of many delicious restaurants including the Old Port Tavern and the Old Port Lobster Bar. This historic section of Portland also has a vivid nightlife culture that attracts hundreds of people each weekend. The city also holds an annual "Old Port Festival" which offers seven stages of musical entertainment, Maine-made crafts and mouth-watering food. This year, the festival attracted a crowd of over 50,000 people!
6. Acadia National Park
Acadia, which is Maine's only national park consists of nearly 50,000 acres of beautiful trails and scenic views. There are many activities for all of its guests including hiking, diving, biking, ocean and lake swimming, horseback riding and more. There are also two park museums that feature Acadia's history as well as wildlife and resource protection. Another interesting fact about Acadia is that its Cadillac Mountain is the highest point on the east coast and is also the first place in the country to see the sun rise each morning.
7. The Headlight
The Portland headlight located In Cape Elizabeth is a very famous Maine landmark. When most people think of Maine the first image that pops up in their head is this lighthouse. The headlight's construction was completed in 1791 making it the oldest lighthouse in the state. It is currently maintained by members of the U.S. Coast Guard and is directly adjacent to Fort Williams Park. The headlight also serves as the finish line to Maine's most popular 10k road race, the beach to Beacon.
