I started watching "How to Get Away with Murder" when the first season made its debut on Netflix. I was immediately hooked and could not wait for season two to return on ABC that fall. Now that season two has ended and is now on Netflix too, you can begin binge-watching this suspenseful drama series and wait in anticipation for the season three return in the fall.
1. Viola Davis
Need I say more? This woman is everything. She won an Emmy for best actress in a drama for her role in the show; making her the first African-American woman to ever do so. In her speech she stated, "The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity." Viola is the perfect person to play leading lady Annalise Keating and she will prove it in every episode.
2. Annalise Keating
Okay, so yes Viola Davis plays main character Annalise, but this is a completely different reason than the first. Davis brings the character to life but Annalise herself is one of the most power women to ever step onto your television screen. This woman works for what she wants and she doesn't stop until she gets it. She is in charge and everyone knows it. This may seem like selfish but believe me this woman will go out of her way, beyond out of her way for the ones she cares about.
3. The relationships between characters
The characters of "HTGAWM" are arguably some of the best ever written and the actors all do an amazing job portraying them. The chemistry between them all is perfect. With that being said, the characters have some of the most intense, dysfunctional, and intimate relationships of any television show I have ever watched. This may be because they have so many secrets between each other, but that is what holds them all together. First, it's Wess and Annalise. A deep dark secret holds these two together and Wess himself doesn't yet know what it is. There is Bonnie and Frank, Annalise's right and left hand (who knows what secrets they are keeping). Then there is Bonnie and Asher, who knows where that is going. Wess and Rebecca, I won't reveal any spoilers but let's just say some really did not see this coming. Then Frank and Laurel, some love it some hate it, I have to say they are exactly what the show needs. Lastly, but certainly not least, Connor and Michaela. These two are on another level when it comes to personal relationships. Just watch and you will see.
4. The timeline
The timeline of this show is like no other. In the beginning, it is revealed to the audience some type of crime that has occurred. Not many details are revealed. The episodes begin to go back and forth in time to show what leads up to the event. Eventually, the show will catch up with itself and the big secret you have been trying to put together all season is revealed (of course it is not like anything you expected) and then the second half of the season is about trying to keep that secret from the police and anyone outside the "Keating 5" (of course this is possible because Annalise has her connections as a defense attorney) Because the plot lay out is like no other it keeps the audience engaged in every moment of every episode.
5. Every episode ends with a cliffhanger
This may seem like it would be an annoying characteristic of a show but honestly it is what keeps viewers on the edge of their seats and it is what keeps them coming back for more every Thursday. You cannot just stop watching because you have to know what happens next. You never know what the Keating 5 is going to do.
6. The secrets
Every episode reveals a deep dark secret that one of the characters is hiding and it will shock you every time. Trying to put it all together becomes the highlight of your Thursday night and your week really. It will amaze you how these people are even capable of thinking straight considering everything they know. This takes Drama Series to a whole other level.
7. Frank
Yes, all of the characters deserve their own number and they all have a dark past, but honestly, Frank is hands down the most mysterious character in the show. As Annalise's right-hand man, he has a lot of "dirty work" under his belt and he seems to be the most level-headed person in the room when everyone else is freaking out. You will spend the entire series trying to put the pieces of his life together and trying to figure out why he is the way he is. And that beard, people, that beard.
I could go on forever about why this show is a must watch. You have to give it to Shonda Rhimes for being behind another amazing show. If you don't join the #TGIT family you are missing out.
