I'm not the biggest fan of comics, but when it comes to films I've always preferred DC over Marvel. DC has always peeked my interest for the same reason it peeks anyone's interest: DC movies have a dark allure that Marvel typically doesn't share. Modern Marvel films tend to be more comedic and age appropriate for teens, whereas DC films are dark and brooding. Deadpool, however, is the perfect combination of light and dark making it stand out from other Marvel films in more ways than one. Here are seven reasons Deadpool is the top Marvel movie to date:
1. The puns
You don't have to watch Deadpool to know how punny it is. I mean every advertisement for it has been on point since it was first announced. By far this is the most humorous Marvel movie to date and I doubt anyone would disagree with that point. The puns stack up back to back to the point where I couldn't hear some dialogue because people were laughing long and hard (pun intended).
2. The action
Some may argue that this film didn't have nearly enough action to suffice. However, if you think about the time spent on Deadpool's back story and more importantly all the other elements—specifically the comedy—then you'd understand that this movie actually has the perfect balance of comedy, action, and romance mixed together. (Besides, it's pretty clear the second Deadpool film will have tons more action).
3. The romance
Let's face it, some of you guys out there probably had to drag your girlfriend to watch this movie right? Luckily, there was just enough passion between Wade (Deadpool's biological name) and Vanessa—even if it was in a creepy and silly way—that I'm sure some women's expectations were exceeded of this action movie. The two have an instant connection when they first meet and their relationship is certainly unlike any other as the movie unfolds.
4. The vulgarity
For those of you with your mind stuck in the gutter you know this movie was a goldmine of sexual perversion. Deadpool's overly sexual and raunchy behavior is one of the primary reasons this movie is hilarious and distinct from other Marvel film's period. If sex jokes make you extremely uncomfortable then this film probably isn't for you.
5. The darkness
A lot of people would probably argue that this film isn't even remotely dark (partially because of Deadpool's foolish demeanor). Yet, if you broke down the meaning of his name alone it's pretty twisted. I won't reveal how he earns his name in the film for those who don't know, but there is an ulterior meaning behind his name. Basically, Deadpool leaves a pool of dead bodies lying around once he's done with his opponents. The fact he's an anti-hero who gruesomely kills his enemies is what separates him from the other popular Marvel heroes (Spiderman, Iron Man, etc.). Just to be clear, I'm not saying all Marvel heroes have a no-kill policy, Deadpool just happens to stand out from The Avenger films for instance.
6. The badass female roles
Sorry fellas, but the male roles have nothing on Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Angel Dust regarding intimidation and tough factor. The women may not have had a lot of air time or dialogue, but they kicked more ass than most of the male cast. Don't be deterred from watching though, alpha-males, Vanessa serves as the hot damsel in distress so both men and women will be satisfied as far as female roles go.
7. Ryan Reynolds, enough said
Ryan Reynolds is somehow still gorgeous with that torched face. Not only that, but even after the torture he endures he still maintains his witty attitude. Like Marilyn Monroe once said, "If you can make a girl laugh, you can make her do anything." Am I right ladies?
