Myth #1: Liberty University doesn't allow kissing or holding hands on campus, and writes people up for it.
This myth is FALSE.
Maybe back in the day it would have been considered an offense, but nowadays (at least in most cases), giving your significant other a quick kiss or holding their hand whilst walking around is not unacceptable.
Just don't get caught sucking on their neck in public because that may land you a rep or even worse, a cameo on the Awkward Couples of LU Facebook page.
Myth #2: There are tunnels underground that connect places on campus, such as the Vines Center.
This myth is TRUE.
There are, in fact, drainage tunnels that run all over campus. Sometimes students crouch walk through them, exploring, but it is most likely frowned upon by LUPD. I would not recommend trying it.
Myth #3: Liberty is racist, intolerant of other religions than Christianity, bigoted, etc.
This myth is FALSE.
The university itself is very welcoming, while still standing firm in its beliefs and making its mission clearly known to all attendees. Liberty is home to MANY foreign students from dozens of countries, and even more in the Online schooling community. There are also professed atheists, Muslims, and Jewish students here as well.
That being said, sometimes students at Liberty are involved in the harassment of a race or religion, and it is dealt with to the best of the university's capabilities. The point I'm trying to make is that Liberty University itself isn't "radically Christian," and it does not discriminate in anyway shape or form.
Myth #4: Liberty students can do no wrong; drugs, alcohol, sex is nonexistent here.
This myth is FALSE.
Liberty is NOT perfect, no campus is, just as no person but Jesus will ever be. Liberty has strict policies against drugs and alcohol, as well as opposite sex in dorms, etc. but things still happen under the radar. Where rules are put in place, sin will strive to bend them.
There are the things I mentioned above, but as far as I've seen, they aren't in plain sight. You can't just accidentally bump into a drug issue or a party here. You would have to actively search for it. Unlike a party school, like Coastal, the "bad" things are out of the way for almost all people here. If you're like me and don't want a part in any of this too, this will be a great thing for you to hear; it may even come as a relief or secure your commitment to LU finally.
Myth #5: Everybody at Liberty is a Christian.
This myth is FALSE.
As mentioned above, multiple religions, although making up a considerably smaller population, call Liberty home. The faculty (professors), to my knowledge, are always professed Christians. Most students are as well, but some aren't. I've heard students here argue that atheism is right, and I've heard some that just aren't sure yet. The main point is: it is indeed the largest Christian university, but not 100% of the people here will be how you expect them to be.
Myth #6: Liberty has the best dining on any campus in the US.
This myth is TRUE!
Chick-fil-A, Dunkin Donuts, Auntie Anne's, Starbucks, Pizza Hut, as well as Italian, Mexican, Asian, and Mediterranean Sodexo locations all are within the confines of Liberty campus. All of these options are amazing, and I've yet to get tired of any of them. The Reber Thomas Dining Hall is rated the #1 campus dining hall in the nation, and I believe they're right. It sometimes gets crowded, but that's about the only issue with it. Rumors going around suggest that a new one is being built soon anyway, so don't worry!
Myth #7: There really is curfew and Convocation is required.
Both are TRUE!
While there is a curfew, most students have no issues conforming to it, and I myself have only ever had one occasion where what I was doing kept me out past curfew (movie night).
Convocation, which is three times per week, IS required for residential students who live on campus. It's not a big deal. Convo is quite fun and most enjoy it a lot.
While there are more myths I'm sure, I wanted to touch on these few for incoming students who may have wanted these answered by a fellow student!
