As a successful performing artist who came from humble Canadian roots, Aubrey Graham (better known by his middle name 'Drake') has lived a life of experience. Whether it be his days on the hit TV show Degrassi as a wheelchair-ridden basketball player, or his moments in the spotlight as one of the greatest rappers of all time, Drake has had a lot of time to reflect on the lessons life has to teach all of us. Thankfully, he was generous enough to reveal a few things he picked up on his road towards fame. Here are seven things you can learn about life from the expert himself, Drake.
Life Lesson #1:
"I drove nice cars, I got a nice house, but now I'm steady missing you like a strikeout"
Sure, nice things are, well, nice to have, but it’s the people in our lives who make living it worthwhile. Drake knows what a shame it is to neglect the people who mean the most to you for things that won’t really matter in the long run. Prioritize the things in your life by importance. What means the most to you and what could you live without?
Life Lesson #2:
"Better late than never but never late is better. They tell me time is money well we’ll spend it together"
It’s never too late to change your mind or do the things you want to do. Don’t keep going because you think your time has passed. Eventually, you’re just going to look back and regret, so go ahead and start doing the things you want to be doing. While Drake totally agrees it’s better doing things late than never doing them at all, he thinks you should just do what you want from the start and never be late in the first place. Listen to your inner champagne pap saying, "get the most out of life."
Life Lesson #3:
"Some things look better inside of the store"
Feeling discouraged because you had to change your major? Maybe the guy you like turned out to be a total dud. Sometimes things seem way better before you actually throw yourself into them. Don’t worry that you’ve wasted your time, get back out there. After all, you’ve got to kiss a couple of frogs before you meet your prince charming, right? I’m sure Drake has had his fair share of run-ins with amphibians.
Life Lesson #4:
"It’s been a moment since I’ve done some public speaking. I find now-a-days it’s best to keep quiet"
Sometimes it’s a good idea to keep to yourself. Over-sharing can be the death of us all, especially if we aren’t careful who we share with. Not everyone is as open as Drake can be, but he’s learned his lesson. It seems that not everyone is someone you can confide in, so Drake considers it best to be selective with the people you reveal private information to.
Life Lesson #5:
"You gotta own it if you want it"
This one is pretty self-explanatory, but it cannot be stressed enough. Drake is arguably one of the most successful performers of our generation, so why not take his advice on success? All you have to do, really, is own it. If you really, really want to achieve that goal of yours, give yourself completely to dominating it. This goes for life too: None of us can go through life half-interested. We have to be committed to success in our daily routine if we really want to get anywhere.
Life Lesson #6:
"I’m urgin all daughters to kiss their mothers with those lips that all that lipstick covers. You never too grown up to miss and hug her"
Call your mom, she misses you. Our moms are our best friends and sometimes our worst nightmare. A little fight with the woman who gave you life shouldn’t go on for too long. We can all get frustrated with our parents, but we should never let it go so far that we lose sight of the healthy relationship one should share with their parents. Drake might have had a big fight with Sandi, but rest assured he let go of all that aggravation and came home to give her a big hug.
Life Lesson #7:
"Live without pretending, love without depending, listen without defending, speak without offending"*Slow clap* Drake basically just explained exactly what you need to do to live a good life. Obviously there are other components, but if you followed this one quote for the rest of your life, chances are you’d be pretty set. "Live without pretending," meaning be true to not only yourself but the people around you. Drake wouldn’t live a life he wasn’t content with, so why should you? "Love without depending," meaning don’t be dependent on the people you love. Relationships are two people loving each other, but you shouldn’t depend on that alone.Sometimes things don’t work out. "Listen without defending"... Drake wants everyone to have a say, but only after they listen to the other side of things. Not everything is what it seems. Finally, "Speak without offending," and try not to do harm to others. Everyone is going through something. You never know if what you might say next could hurt.
