7 Lessons Learned From Traveling

Throughout my 19 years of life so far, I’ve been fortunate enough to travel quite a bit. From exploring the United States a number of times to once traveling halfway around the world, there are so many valuable lessons I’ve learned from being placed outside of my comfort zone. There are so many valuable lessons that we can get from exploring the world outside of our home, and traveling often provides us with experiences we couldn’t get anywhere else.

1. How to challenge yourself

Making the decision to travel isn’t always simple. There are a lot of factors that go into it, such as costs, time, and other responsibilities. However, if we make it happen and take the challenge of figuring all of that out it will definitely be worth everything that’s sacrificed.

2. To be patient

While traveling, things don’t always go as planned. Flights get delayed, plans change, weather doesn’t always cooperate and much more. These experiences have the power to teach us how to be patient and flexible. It’s okay when things don’t go exactly as planned, and sometimes what actually happened might be better than what was planned.

3. How to appreciate your home

After being away from your home for any amount of time, you start to miss all of the little things that you took for granted. Whether it’s being with loved ones or simply missing your own bed, being away makes you appreciate your home in a way that you may have otherwise overlooked.

4. Good things come from leaving your comfort zone

Traveling allows you to learn so much about other cultures and people as well as yourself. When you step out of your comfort zone you open yourself up to endless possibilities and opportunities for learning new things. You’ll realize there’s so much more to life than you could have ever imagined and the world is a beautiful place. You’ll learn that it’s exciting to expand your horizons and forget the familiar for awhile.

5. How to appreciate others’ differences

If you stay in the same place your whole life, you’ll never know all of the awesome aspects of different people and cultures. In doing so you’ll be able to learn a lot about yourself as well. You’ll see what you appreciate and what you don’t appreciate about different parts of the world, and what you value from your own home.

6. To try new things

Whether you’re learning a new language or simply trying weird new food, traveling allows you to try new things, and how to appreciate that. This, in turn, can allow you to find new things that you love and would have never had the opportunity to discover had you not made the journey.

7. To go with the flow

Just like traveling teaches you patience, it also teaches you to go with the flow. When plans change, or you get the opportunity to do something you didn’t plan on, you should be willing to take it as a new adventure. This is useful in everyday life as well. It’s important to remember that things don’t always go as planned, and that’s completely okay.

Overall, traveling allows us to have countless experiences that wouldn’t be possible any other way. We live in world with so much to offer. If we only allow ourselves the opportunity to see what we’re familiar with, we'll be missing out on so much.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – Saint Augustine

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
