Coming into college, I thought about how far away finals were and how I would have forever to even start worrying about them. Little did I know, they would sneak up! Before I knew it, I was trying to cram all the reading in I didn't pay much attention to, trying to find perfect study spots, and figuring out my study schedule. Here are a few things I wish I knew before starting finals my freshman year.
1. Don't get behind.
Even though it may seem like a lot of homework or reading when you are given the assignment, do it; it'll pay off. Before you know it, you are trying to read hundreds of pages the week before finals, trying to catch up on details that will be on the test. It'll all be worth it.
2. Review with friends and classmates.
It's a lot easier to study with friends or classmates that are also studying the same information. You can quiz each other and even learn new ways to memorize certain information. They can keep you occupied and motivated instead of constantly getting distracted.
3. Sleep.
This is a huge one. I know everyone thinks they have to pull an all-nighter the night before to cram everything in and review, but sleep is important. Going into an exam with only a couple hours of sleep isn't good for you. Plan in advance when you can study so you can get enough sleep.
4. Reward yourself.
After hours of studying, take a break and treat yourself. Get some ice cream or candy, buy some coffee, you deserve it! Finals week is stressful, some sweets won't kill you.
5. Double check information.
Make sure you know what you are suppose to be studying and know the details. There's no need to stress about extra things you know won't be on the final. Also, make sure you check when and where your finals are. It may sound silly, but double check your exam schedule.
6. Finals aren't your whole grade.
Yes, finals are important BUT, they aren't your whole grade. Try your best and study but don't think that this final will drastically change your grade, unless you don't study.
7. Eat breakfast.
The morning of your finals, it is important to give yourself plenty of time to get ready and have time for breakfast. It is very important to make sure your brain is awake and your body is going. A big breakfast never hurt anyone.
