In college, you will meet hundreds of different people. Some will come into your life and stay, others will be people you get a glimpse of in the café or some you see at a party and then you’re not even totally convinced they attend the school! Out of everyone you’ll meet, your roommates will be the most important ones!
Most people end up rooming with someone they don’t know, but fortunately for me, I get to room with my two best friends for this upcoming school year! However, that doesn’t mean they won’t have to fulfill the rules of the roommate! They are the people that will help make college more tolerable and more enjoyable through all the worst times, and they will emphasize the greatness in the good times! Here are some of the jobs of good roommates:
1.The Positive Influencer
How long have you been putting off that essay? How long have you been watching Netflix instead of studying for your exam? Whether you’re aware of that, your roommate will be! They will tell you straight up that you will ruin your life, or you will fail college if you don’t get it together! They might even say something that won’t seem like a big deal at the time, but their words can sit in your brain for hours, just digging in your psyche. They will tell you things that will make you want to log off of Netflix and make you stop Snapchatting and open that textbook!
2. The Cheerleader
Besides your parents, these people will be the ones that will cheer you on for everything! From getting a good grade on an assignment, to earning your starting spot, to getting the guts to ask out that guy you’ve been talking their ear off about, they will lose their mind for you and get so hype and they’ll most likely want to celebrate by getting lit later that night.
3. The Gym Partner
There will be days where you will order a large Casey’s pizza and eat out of the box all day while chasing it with creamer with a splash of coffee (if you drink coffee the way I do), and then there will be a moment where you take a pause from shoving pizza in your face, look at each other in disgust and say, “Do you want to go workout?” Me personally, I feel like if you work out the day you eat like crap it cancels out and it’s like it never happened! Going to the gym by yourself is the worst way to work out! When you have your motivational cheerleader with you, it will be ten times better!
4. Heart Mender
If you had gotten dumped, you know the pain is unreal. The feeling of heartbreak is unbearable and you will want to just sit there and cry and feel sorry for yourself. Your roommates will bring you ice cream, watch movies with you and talk it out with you. However, after a while, if your roommates are real with you, they won’t let you do that forever. They will drag your sad ass out of bed, away from anything written or produced by Nicholas Sparks, and get you smoking hot and take you out. They don’t want to see you sad! They know that you are worth more than the guy who hurt you that obviously didn’t realize you had crazy friends that are plotting his death while they make you look irresistible for the night out. When I had my heart broken this past year, my friends took me to abandoned houses and we threw rocks through windows, because they knew that the sound of breaking glass makes me stupidly happy! Getting over a broken heart isn’t easy, but when you have these amazing people in your life, it’s so much easier. Then they will pull aside any possible future relationship and tell them, that they will destroy their will to live if they hurt you.
5. Date for every meal
You are going to be with you roommates a minimum of 75% of your time, and that’s just when you’re in the room, that doesn’t include classes together or if you are both involved in sports. The most important place to be with your roommate is in the café. If they are not there, you will be sitting alone and that’s a guarantee. You always have to send a text to the group chat around lunch time asking, “Is anyone going to lunch?” or “Did you guys already eat?” and if they respond yes to that second question you become content with not eating lunch in the café that day and just hope there’s something in the dorm. Or, you just man up and take up a whole table by yourself or you can always pull a Mean Girls scene, and head to the stalls.
6. The Fashionista
There have been moments where you have put something on that you thought looked totally banging and then you leave and get to wherever you’re going, and you look at your outfit, or your makeup, or your hair and think, “WHY DID I LEAVE LOOKING LIKE THIS!?” We’ve all been there! This is where your roommates come in to save the day. Hopefully, your roommates will be as blunt as mine and will be real friends and tell you, “Honey, no. That’s not flattering.” Real friends will be the ones who tell you that you don’t look good in that top because they want you to do the same to them! They will tell you if you look like a hooker or a hobo when you guys plan a night out. The plus side of rooming with your friends is that you have more choices for clothes! If you don’t have something that matches those shorts, they will get your back and throw like, five different options at you. They will make sure that you are killing it wherever you go.
7. Best Friends for Life
Last but not least, the people you room with will be your best friends. They will know all about you, and they will be the people that you turn to for any and all advice. They will be the one you vent to, the shoulder to cry on, the one that you can trust to make sure you get home safely. They will treat you better than any guy you meet in college and they will forever have your back. You can laugh with them or binge watch hours of Netflix with them. I have been blessed with the two best roommates who are also my best friends and I don’t think I can ever tell them in words how much I adore them and how much I love and appreciate them. I can't wait to take on round two of college with you guys!
