First things first, not many people know about the existence of Hungary. It is partly because it is a small country, literally the size of one of the smaller states here in America. But you have to know that Hungary has a famous history and incredibly beautiful monuments. We must not forget about the language either. It is one of the hardest in the world. So now I am going to teach you some phrases that could be useful when you visit Hungary or if you just want to show off around your friends.
1. Szeretlek
It means "I love you". I know that in the United States everyone says it all the time, even to their friends, but in Hungary it has a more powerful meaning. We mostly say it to our partner or family.
2. Szia
This word means "Hey!" in English. When we want to greet a friend or say goodbye this is the word we use. We only use it during an informal situation. We have other phrases to greet or say goodbye in a formal situation which are more complicated. ( Jó napot kívánok!- Good afternoon!/ Viszontlátásra!- Goodbye!)
3. Nem
It simply means "No!". Believe me, it is a good word to know. If you don't understand what someone is offering you, I advise you to use this word.
4. Hogy vagy?/ Mi újság?
This means "How are you?/ What's up?". It is a good phrase to use every day. We use these two in different ways. When we ask "Mi újság?" we refer to how was someone's day and not about how they feel. When we ask "Hogy vagy?" that's when we refer to how someone is feeling.
5. Jó étvágyat!
Which means "Bon appetit!". This is what we say to each other before we start eating. It is more likely a polite gesture that we say to enjoy your meal.
6. Köszönöm!/ Köszi!
This means "Thank you!". The first word is the longer version and the second one is the shorter, more informal version.
7. Nem tom'!
It means "I don't know!". You use this phrase when you actually don't know something or when you are just too lazy to answer a question.
I hope you liked my little vocabulary tour and that you are going to be able to visit Hungary at some point in your life. It is a beautiful place with delicious traditional foods, monuments and architectures, and it's definitely worth visiting.
