For my fellow Netflix addicts, it is often a struggle to find shows and movies to watch because you've seen nearly everything. Your friends tell you about an awesome "new" movie they watched the other day on Netflix, and you just politely listen and then end up revealing that you already saw that months ago. Lesser known works are a real hit or miss, but these seven films are certified home runs from yours truly.
1. Jamesy Boy
This true-story drama starring James Woods, Taissa Farmiga, and Mary Louis-Parker tells the story of an imprisoned teen who meets a fellow prisoner who will change his life forever. Dark, gritty, and yet still hopeful, this movie will have you hooked from the start.
2. The Institute
This unique documentary tell the story of the Jejune Institute. This faux institution began a city-wide art project/real-life game in San Francisco. The players and the game itself is like nothing you have seen before. Take a trip into this strange world created by The Institute.
3. Lost Angels
Lost Angels tells the story of Los Angeles' Skid Row. Thomas Napper takes us into the heart of the Skid Row and gives a face to the people who take on extreme challenges every day. This documentary shows the harsh reality of life, but also some of the most beautiful and caring people in this world. Get your tissues ready because this one brings a lot of emotion.
4. Short Term 12
I simply cannot say enough about this movie. Grace (Brie Larson) is a worker at a home for at risk-teens. Her life is dedicated to helping these young kids overcome their struggles, but Grace has some issues of her own she must address. This powerful movie will hit you on every emotional level. You'll be kicking yourself for not watching it sooner. One of the best movies on Netflix, and one of my personal all time favorites.
5. Mr. Nobody
This combination sci-fi, drama, and romance will have your mind working overtime. This cerebral flick follows Nemo Nobody, the last living mortal reflecting back on his own life and the decisions he made. We follow Nemo on a journey where he explores how different his life would have been had he made just a few other choices. Visually stunning and a very deep plot, this story will keep your eyes glued to the screen.
6. It's Such a Beautiful Day
I don't even know how to describe this movie. In this simple animated movie we follow a man named Bill. A rather normal man, with a very abnormal mind. I have never seen a film like this one before. It is strange, it is short, it is good. Watch this movie and you will definitely be able to have an interesting conversation with someone about it.
7. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father
This true story documentary/memorial tells the life of Dr. Andrew Bagby, a man who was murdered by his ex-girlfriend who was also pregnant with their child. Through a compilation of interviews from those who knew him, home movies, and the proceedings in his ex's trial, we learn the story of this man's life. Kurt Kuenne puts together this wonderful film so Andrew Bagby's son will know of his father regardless of his absence. A wonderful and compelling film. You must check it out.
I could talk about hundreds of great films and shows on Netflix, but these are enough to get you started. Every day is a great day to watch a movie as Netflix is a way of life. Enjoy!
