7 Things I Hate About My Dog

Dogs are "man's best friend," for sure, but dogs are also the absolute worst.

7 Things I Hate About My Dog
Olivia Howard

My two Great Pyrenees, Otis and Ruby (rest in peace, Eddie!) are more than my children, they are my soul. The amount of love I have for those furry kids is so immense it's indescribable. Otis, being the newest addition to our family, has grown so much in his year and a half of life. In that growth period, he has rapidly become simultaneously my favorite and least favorite dog I have ever lived with. Here are 10 reasons why Otis is actually the worst:

1. He physically cannot be ugly

How unfair is that, to never be able to look ugly. Just look.

Even before the glo-up, ugh.

2. ....I take that ugly thing back

Take that, kid.

3. He loves too much

Since summer has started, I usually go out every night and don't come home from anywhere between 2-4 a.m. When I walk in the door, the thunderous sound of Otis sprinting to get down the stairs to see me cracks me up every time. But then, of course, the wrath of his love hits me...literally. The way he greets me every night makes you think I was coming home from war after two years. I sit on the couch and wait for him to pounce up onto my lap and vigorously sniff/lick my face, hair, clothes, and what not. If I even make the attempt to get up before he's done he becomes a dead weight to ensure I actually cannot move.

4. He's my alarm clock

Whether it's him sniffing my face 'till I wake up, jumping up onto the bed and laying on top of me, or pacing around my room whining loudly until I wake up, he manages to find a way to get me out of my zombie-like slumber every morning. What's terrifying about that is if I "hit snooze" on him so many times, he will sit and stare at me until I wake up, then proceed to attack me with slobbery licks right in my face; not exactly the facial I was looking for first thing in the morning.

5. He overshadows Ruby

Otis is a big, walking personality. He is the doggiest dog ever, it's like he acts off a script. Mind you, Ruby has been a strange dog since we got her. She's very cute, is extremely sweet, and loves people and kids, but she's very much the middle child, always being in the background of what Otis does. We call her the ASPCA Dog because she has a way of looking so heartbroken every time she stares into your eyes.

6. He has no sense of personal space

Whether it's someone in my family or Ruby, he has no issue whatsoever with getting up in everyone's business.

7. He's the best dog, ever.

Otis will be my fourth dog I have had the honor of living with. Each one has had a different personality. Grady was an introverted character, Eddie was our bodyguard, Ruby is the weird horse-girl in the class, and Otis is the kid that's so goofy you just look at him and start laughing. It's awful because I will never know a dog as amazing as Otis, he has set the bar so high for the dogs I plan to own in the future. Even though he can be a little evil sometimes (he's now coined the nickname "Satan"), he is still my heart. I love you, Otie!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
