Double, double, toil and trouble. The magic that JK Rowling introduced us to in 1997 has changed modern literature for the best. It has been nearly 10 years and Potter heads are still some of the most intense fans in the world. We all know that letter from Hogwarts at age 11 is possibly the most coveted acceptance letter known to man. I would give anything to take an OWL and wear those chic black robes. I am mostly jealous of the magic that the wizarding world gets the luxury of possessing. As my welcome week of school comes to a close, here is a list of seven charms and spells that I and most college students would love to have during the first week back to school.
1. Accio
Description: Summoning charm, used to teleport small items from across the room. Done by pointing wand at desired object or speaking the object after the spell.
Welcome week is essentially designed for laying in bed all day. The idea of lifting a finger during the day is so horrendous that I might cry. This spell would eliminate most needs for getting out of bed. Accio, water. Accio, Advil. Accio, Jimmy Johns.
2. Age Line
Description: A potion made by Fred and George in "Goblet of Fire" that makes you grow older rapidly. Unfortunately, you might be sporting some grey hairs just moments after.
There comes a point during welcome week that ever minor thinks to themselves, “Wow my life would be a lot easier if I were 21.” The Age Line could do just that. The police are at a party checking IDs? Just quickly conjure up an Age Line potion and we will be in the clear.
3. Aguamenti
Description: Shown in "The Half-Blood Prince," Aguamenti is the water-making spell.
If this spell did exist, I would keep a kiddie pool next to my bed to fill up with water after every night out on the town. It would also be extremely helpful when wanting to take spontaneous baths.
4. Alohomora
Description: A charm used often in the "Harry Potter" series for opening forbidden chests and secret passageway doors.
Can I just say that Harry and the gang are never spotted in lanyards? Where do they keep their keys to get into the building or their dormitories? Ha, wait, I remember. They have this wonderful charm that always allows them to unlock their doors with a swish and flick. This charm might be the most useful of all to us easily forgetting folk. During my freshman year I lost my keys so many times that my friend threatened to staple it to me.
5. Obliviate
Description: The most well-known scene for this spell is one of the most heart-wrenching in the entire series, where Hermione erases her parents memory of her. Obliviate wipes certain memories clean from those it is cast on.
Obliviate would be great for not letting your best friend remember that she got rejected from getting a guy's number, but I think we have something like this in the Muggle world called tequila.
6. Portus
Description: Portus will turn any everyday item into a port-key. A turkey sandwich to Turkey? A lamp to your best friend's house? For all those times you didn’t wanna be where you were.
The beauty of welcome week is that it should still be warm enough for you to walk to your destination instead of driving or using other forms of transportation. But sometimes when the night is coming to a close, all you want is some Taco Bell, and then to be in bed, but no, you walked, so no crunch wrap supreme for you. The portus charm would be perfect in this situation. One port-key to Taco Bell, the next one to your bedroom. Your feet will thank you in the morning.
7. Refilling Charm
Description: The refilling charm refills refreshments, making them bottomless.
This might be most needed charm in the college Muggle world. No further questions.
The magic may be fictional, but a girl can dream. Even though I am well past the age of 11, I still check my mailbox for my Hogwarts acceptance letter and try to fly on my broom.
