7 Benefits To Being Single During The Holidays

Being in a relationship for the holidays can be overrated.

Don't get me wrong, it's a romantic and beautiful time for couples to spend together. However, it's a romantic time that has been extremely commercialized (I'm looking at you, jewelry stores).

For those who don't have a significant other this season, here's a few reasons why you shouldn't get down on yourself.

1. Less stress about finding the perfect gift.

Shopping for your family and friends can be hard enough, but throwing a boyfriend or girlfriend into the mix is just more stressful. Trying to balance between something romantic and thoughtful, but not too much (especially if you're in the beginning of a relationship) is hard!

2. You can spend the money on yourself, instead of on someone else.

'Tis the season. You could totally get that coat or new boots you've had your eye on for awhile. Or maybe your mom or dad deserve a little extra for all that they do for you; more time and money is never a bad thing. Throw in a nice massage along with that new tool set or those cashmere gloves you got for them.

3. You can stay in bed forever and watch ABC Family's 25 Days of Christmas...no judgement or explanation necessary.

No one's pretending to like the sappy, cliche Christmas movies you consider a guilty pleasure; bring on "Holiday in Handcuffs" and "The Polar Express."

4. More eggnog and spiked spiced cider for you.

Excessive drinking, full speed a head!

5. No weird questions on your relationship from family members.

The third degree is put off for another year, thank god. It's a little easier to answer "I'm focusing on myself and school right now." Relatives like hearing that you're being successful (for the most part).

6. Dance party for one, VIP (aka, you) only.

We all get crunk to "All I Want For Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey. If boy bands are more your style though, "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" by N*SYNC is a solid choice. Wear those tacky holiday socks with pride and just jam out, no shame.

7. Focus on your family.

As much as they may drive you crazy, the holiday season is meant to be spent with your family. It's one of the big reasons we all look forward to it. Spending Thanksgiving dinner eating your mom's stuffing and grandmother's turkey, while you make fun of your siblings is a great break from life. Sharing stories while decorating your house for Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa makes you realize how lucky you are to be related to these insane people.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
