1. Take a trip to Top of the World
This stunning look out point is tucked away behind the entrance to Chelsea sign off highway 280. It requires a bit of hiking to get to, but it is well worth the excursion. For locals, going to visit is a favorite pastime, and the view is spectacular. One can see all of Birmingham’s beautiful city lights glittering from over the mountain.
2. Go blueberry picking at Bear Mountain Blueberry farm
Located in Springville (about a thirty minute drive from Birmingham), this quaint little farm gives visitors the opportunity to explore and pick a gallon of blueberries for $8. Make sure to bring lots of water and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors on a sunny day!
3. Find a treasure at What’s on Second
Located conveniently next to Urban Standard, this unique antique store has the perfect combination of both kooky and fascinating items to peruse during your visit. From old video games to sports collectables, to theatre memorabilia and mannequins, it is truly an experience.
4. Take a climb at First Avenue Rocks
Located off 1st Avenue South, it is hard to miss that sticker-covered door. With rentable climbing shoes and plethora of challenging trails, this indoor rock climbing adventure is a must-do. The feeling of conquering the “easy” tape trails and making it to the top is surreal. If falling is a worry, fear not! There are multiple (very squishy) crash pads for a soft landing. The music here is also really great with a blend of electronic and chill sounds. Yoga classes are also offered here for those preferring to stay ground-bound.
5. Go to a show at the Spring Street Firehouse
This space off 41st Street South hosts incredible up-and-coming artists and some big names in the indie rock/punk music scene. Even if the music style isn’t quite for you, the people are always eclectic and fun. The renovated fire station boasts occasional art shows showcasing local talent. It’s a great start to a night in Avondale.
6. Relax on the Cahaba
The beautiful Cahaba river has an entrance off Grant’s Mill Road. There is a nice swimming hole located about a tenth of a mile and a right turn away from the entrance, and it even has a rope swing! It’s perfect for cooling off on a hot summer day.
7. Do a bit of urban exploration with friends
It is always fun to explore the abandoned once-beautiful buildings and structures of Birmingham. The ruins of the old Irondale Furnace can be found near the intersection of Old Leeds Road and Shady Lane in Irondale. They are fairly old and part of a park, but still interesting. If you are on the hunt for something more adventurous and slightly creepy, head over to Memorial Mound, the Cat Daddy Tower, or the Brown-Marx tower, all abandoned around the 1900s with original architecture and artifacts present. Be sure to bring a camera to preserve the memories!
