5 Interesting-ish Facts About Me

Upon first glance, I don't seem like the kind of person who likes ANY of these things. They are little known interests of mine and I hold them dear to my heart. I don't bring them up in conversation very often so some things on this list may surprise you! If they don't, then I should probably watch my back, because you might be stalking me.

1. Hiking

Now, let me clarify. I like hiking. I don't like camping. Like, at all. I would prefer to hike to a pretty place and then walk right back to a luxury cabin in the mountains, but hiking itself has always been something I can get behind. I like getting to a destination to see something beautiful. One of my most vivid memories is hiking down a ridiculous incline to go see a small forest of redwoods in California with my family. Man, it was tough. But I did get to see a tree with a trunk wide enough for a Cadillac to go through, so it was worth it.

2. White Water Rafting

I know, crazy, right? It was something I tried with a youth group when I was about 11, and since then, I've been absolutely nuts about it. Me and my family used to go on mountain trips all the time, and I would always be so psyched to go white water rafting. It's intense, and my stomach is always sore after, but the rush I get from it is unparalleled to this day. I actually have a dream where I take a summer off in between graduation and Grad School and I become a white water rafting instructor.

3. National Parks

Maybe after seeing the first two, this one isn't so surprising. But... I cannot tell a lie. National Parks are one of the many things I will totally geek out over. I'm a history major and a lover of natural wonders, so a National Park, to me, is like the equivalent of a mini Disney World. It may seem like a dramatic comparison, but in all honesty, I'd pick Yellowstone over Disney World any day.

4. Drawing

I love drawing. And, truth be told, I'm actually pretty good at it. Obviously, I'm pretty out of practice and don't take it seriously enough to pursue an art career or anything, but it's always been something that I enjoy and something that I excel at. I can't paint for the life of me, but art in general is fun for me. I'm pretty good at all things on the art spectrum: singing, acting, drawing, writing, etc. But if you ask me to do a math problem I will literally freeze up. Like those fainting goat videos on Youtube.

5. Hockey

Wow, totally out of left field, right? Or should I say left ice. Hehe. (Wow, that was bad). But anyway, most people are very surprised to find that I am very fond of the Canadian Game of Hockey. I live in South Louisiana. What could have possibly propelled me toward the most northern sport in existence? Coincidence. I have a Canadian pen pal I met about 2 years ago and she kind of slowly introduced me to the sport. A few months ago, I decided to go to the gym more and at our gym, there is always some ESPN channel on. At the time, the World Cup of Hockey was pretty much the only thing on ESPN, because no other main North American Sport was in season. So I watched a hockey game on the elliptical. I lost track of time, and basically stayed on for the whole thing. I burned 1000 calories, and fell in love with hockey.

My team is the Pittsburgh Penguins, and my favorite player is Sidney Crosby, arguably the best player in the league. He is a dork, and he loves the sport so much it's ridiculous. I also own his jersey. Shocker, right?

6.KPOP

I bet you thought Hockey was my weirdest interest and I'm glad I get to prove you wrong. I'd like to think that I can explain this without making myself sound like a total weirdo, but we all know that's impossible. I had a phase in middle school where I watched a lot of anime, like every other American tween. (Right? That's not weird, right?) In the process of watching anime on Youtube, I was led to Jpop (Japanese pop) and then eventually Kpop (Korean pop). It's kind of like when you go on Youtube to watch a lecture for class and you end up watching a Buzzfeed video about edible lipstick. (You've done it. It's fine. There's no judgment here).

Kpop, in my opinion, is infinitely better than American Pop music, despite not being able to understand the lyrics in the songs. The sound is more upbeat, the videos are way more interesting, and the subject matter of each song is far less racy and repetitive. I've always been a fan of Asian culture in general, so I really dove into Kpop and Korean culture in high school to the point where the only music on my phone was in Korean, and my browser history was mainly Korean TV shows and dramas. As I've gotten older, it has become less of an obsession, and more of a quirk in my personality. I listen to it occasionally (a.k.a. when I'm not listening to the Hamilton Soundtrack), often when I'm working out. (Don't knock it till you try it, KPop is the BEST workout music EVER.) But I no longer stay up till 3 AM to listen to a new album or see a new group debut. Good times, though.

7. (BONUS) Hum and Whistle

I can do both. At the time time. It sounds like a spaceship. Just in case you were wondering. (I know you were.)

Now you know 7 interesting-ish facts about me, and you can beat me in icebreaker games. Congrats! I hope this sheds some light on my personality because these quirks all make up who I currently am today.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
