6 Things I Vow To Try At Austin City Limits

Here is how I'm planning to make the most of my time at Austin City Limits this year. What's yours?

Austin City Limits is Austin’s time to shine. Although the lineup is jam packed with amazing artists each year, this is more than just a music festival. Remember to support local businesses and to really soak in all of the special moments, before the weekend is over in the blink of an eye. Here’s what I plan to do:

1. Try some new food.

Austin is a food paradise. It’s a city known for having eclectic restaurants scattered throughout the city. One of the best parts is the food trucks. The good news is these vendors will be at ACL. Yes, that includes Amy’s Ice Creams, Torchy’s Tacos, and even Stubb’s Bar-B-Q. This year, I want to try something unique. Skull and Cakebones makes unique vegan cakes, such as their Affogato Cakewich. This is a coffee cake rolled in almonds and topped with vanilla ice cream. I’m drooling.

2. Buy art.

Not only is food a trademark of the city, Austin loves supporting its local artists. Therefore, ACL is home to an art market. You never know what kind of trinkets you may find here: cowboy boots, soy candles, or a new vintage dress. I’m stopping by The Art Garage, which gives artists a place to display their work.

3. Support a local organization.

While they can, ACL wants to do some good in the community. They give local organizations an opportunity to come to the festival and let their message be heard, such as Keep Austin Beautiful and the Austin Music Foundation. Support your community by stopping by their tent to find out a way you can make a difference.

4. Discover my new favorite beer.

ACL gives festival goers a chance to dive into some beer. If there is a break in your day, and you’re trying to find a place to recuperate, try stopping by the Barton Springs Beer Hall, where you’ll discover 16 different craft beers. After visiting Colorado this past summer, I’m excited to taste the Breckenridge Agave Wheat. I’ll let you know if it becomes my new favorite.

5. Meet my favorite band.

Honda and Waterloo Records are hosts of this year’s Artist Signing Shack. Here you can meet your favorite artists, and have them sign something you brought, or just your face. Check out Waterloo’s Instagram to find the schedule.

See you at 5:30, Shakey Graves!

6. See a new band.

Yes, Drake will be here. DRAKE! The Strokes too! Crazy, right? The lineup is filled with some big names in music. This is also a chance to discover some new bands too. Who knows, they could become your new favorite. Often times at festivals, I get lost in the crowd trying to see big name artists, and passing up bands I’ve never heard of before. This year will be different. Finding a new band gives for a more intimate performance with a smaller crowd.

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
