No healthy relationship ever makes it out alive without an argument here and there. And that's okay. It is important to make sure your arguments improve the quality of your relationship rather than tear it down. Unfortunately, too many relationships turn toxic from poor communication skills during disagreements. Most all of us have probably experienced this once or twice in the past, so I thought I would share with you a few tips to avoid that in the future.
When you argue, the argument should always be productive. You should learn and take something from each disagreement and remember it to prevent similar arguments later. Learn from it, remember it, and move forward.
2. Resolve it before going to sleep.
Never go to bed upset. All that is going to do is prolong hurt feelings and set you up for a long and stressful day to come. Resolving it before you sleep will allow both of you to sleep with no fear of what argument will come tomorrow.
3. Keep it private and only between the two of you.
Certain arguments are meant to stay in the relationship. Don’t ever involve outsiders if it does not involve them. All this does is make private problems public, and everyone will want to have a say. No bueno.
4. When it is resolved it needs to stay resolved.
Don’t ever dig up buried bones. Once an argument is resolved it should be learned from and moved past. Returning to these issues creates a toxic, bitter relationship that no one enjoys.
5. Fix the problem immediately.
When you allow for an open and productive argument, always try to fix the problem as soon as it is brought up. This shows you are listening to your significant other and proving to them you are trying to become better.
6. Always say I love you.
Let them know that no matter how mad or upset you are, you still at the end of the day love them to pieces. Arguments are a healthy puzzle piece to every relationship and as long as you remind them that no matter the circumstances, you still love them unconditionally, that everything will be okay.
