Six Things to Tell Your Sister Before She Goes to College

A message from an older (and wiser) sister.

Six Things to Tell Your Sister Before She Goes to College

I have a lot of titles in my life. I am a student. I'm a daughter. I'm a philanthropy chair, a campus rep, a babysitter, an active member, a friend, a pet-owner, but most importantly: I'm an older sister.

It's my job to be a role model and a leader...someone that my sister can be proud of and aspire to be. It's my job to set examples and set standards so she can hopefully follow in my footsteps. Now that my sister is going to college next year, all of that is really starting to hit me.

And hey, they say the best way to learn is from other people's mistakes, right?

1. Meeting people is important.
When you're on a campus with thousands of people you don't know, it's easy to feel alone or lost. You're no longer a big fish in a small pond. No one knows you. Start fresh. Be that weird girl that introduces herself to everyone. Literally everyone. You can never have too many friends.

2. Go the f*** to class.
Yeah, it sucks waking up for an 8 a.m. after a night out, but I promise that going to class still drunk/hungover for 50 minutes is a lot better than having a 0 as your attendance grade.

3. Learn how to drink.
It's easy to come to college and get hammered every night and make a fool of yourself. Don't be "that girl" everyone talks about. Learn how to have a good time without alcohol or drink in moderation. It's a marathon, not a sprint!

4. Think about your future.
College = opportunities...the good and the bad. Think about the possible consequences of what you're doing before you do it. What you do will never leave you. Remember that.

5. Guys are smart; you have to be smarter.
People say that guys are dumb, but they really deserve more credit. They know exactly what to say to get what they want from girls. You HAVE to be able to distinguish the genuine from the fake. College guys normally want one thing. Don't let one night of fun cause a lifetime of regret.

6. Don't blink.
These four years are supposed to be the best years of your life, but they are what you make it. Get involved. Find a passion or a hobby. Make connections. Establish yourself. Be the woman you want to be. Have a damn good time and be smart! I promise you can do both.

You're smart, brave, confident, and beautiful. Tell yourself that every day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
