No matter where you're from in the country, there are different slang and terms used. Whether it's super outrageous and incomprehensible such as "bagging up" (shoutout to you Delaware!), or something completely understandable such as "bail" which is to leave abruptly from an event or a social gathering that just got really awkward, really quick. This article is for my Wisconsinites out there, and the terms we use to best describe our everyday activities.
1. "Bubbler"
This term a lot of Wisconsinites use to describe the infamous water fountain. This is a generational thing, as my parents baby boomer generation used this term, not millennials.
2. "Up North"
No, no, no. We aren't talking about the creepy movies about "Into The Woods" or being stuck in a cabin and not being able to get out. We're talking about fishing, eating the best food you ever have in your life, s'mores every night, and tubing on the lake. For most Northerners, this is the highlight of your summer being able to get sunburnt and have done water skiing or jet skiing.
3. Packers
Okay, let's start with this. Every single time I see a Lambeau Leap I get tears in my eyes. I'm a very emotional person, to begin with, but any Wisconsinite can agree that this is truly an iconic moment and it affects all of us, during any Packers football game. This team is our team, and every season my man, my one and only, Aaron Rodgers promises that they will "run the table" and that's exactly what they do. Into the regular season, and into the postseason. BRB while I go and wear all my green and gold and bawl my eyes out yelling, "Go Pack Go!"
4. "The Axe"
Is this not the funniest gif you have ever seen? Yes, yes it is. "The Axe" is a tradition held between the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "The Axe" is passed back and forth between each university depending upon who wins each football game. I won't lie, Wisconsin has had possession of the coveted Axe for the past 13 years so you tell me who is the better mammal. Oh and On, Wisconsin!
5. New Glarus Beer
The best beer you will ever taste. With different varieties each with a decadent flavor, this is known to Wisconsinites and Americans alike. Only sold in Wisconsin, it is extremely difficult to find outside of the state border. Enjoy it while you can, because once it's gone you'll have to buy more.
6. Flatlanders or "FIB"
I just love this term so much. I truly describe the struggle that Wisconsin people go through on a daily basis. My one piece of advice for those Flatlanders, learn how to drive. Oh and also, look up on FIB.
There you have it. My favorite state, my home, and my childhood all in one. I will forever love the state that raised me to be who I am today. From the long, frigid winters to the best summers, I will forever love you Wisconsin. Go Pack and On Wisconsin!
