Six Songs That Will Give You All The Feels When Leaving Home

There is less than a week until I and many other students leave home for the first time to live in a new environment. What better way to help express some of our feelings than through a little music?

1. "Return to Pooh Corner" by Kenny Loggins.

This is a song my parents used to play to get me to fall asleep. Little did I know that it would have a deeper meaning to me now as I leave for college. It is a song that makes you miss childhood, but also one that makes you glad for all the little moments you had growing up. It brings to mind the quote, "Promise me you'll always remember: You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think" which was written by the author A.A. Milne, who wrote "Winnie the Pooh". It gives a little hope for the future as we all grow up and move on, and shows that a little bit of childhood will always stay in our hearts.

2. "Seasons of Love" from Rent.

The first time I heard this song was watching the chamber singers at my high school. I remember feeling this warmth in my chest. It made me so happy, even though I knew that some of the singers would be leaving very soon. there are so many ways in which we can measure time and the value of it. And as I leave for college I hope that my year will be full of meaningful experiences. Maybe my first of those experiences will be leaving home for the first time.

3. "For Good" from Wicked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uzrGFQysfYU

This is one of those songs that makes you think about how much you're going to miss the people that you're leaving behind. But I know those people have made a significant impact on my life and that they are proud to see me go on to college.

4. "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3_0Pky8vVg

This song was one of the first Queen songs that really got me interested in the band. It's one of those songs that you have to put on in the car and listen to. Maybe while you're on your way to move in to the dorms!

5. "Brave" by Sara Bareilles.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyAfjUHlFSM

As you get ready to meet new people, you start to worry about what they may think of you. This song gives me a little more confidence. We all have the power to become whoever we dream, so we should be brave and be who we are, especially at such a big time in our lives.

6. "On Top of the World" by Imagine Dragons.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8PrTzLaLHc

This song makes you excited for the changes ahead. At this moment in time, Ido somewhat feel like I'm on top of the world. As I and many others leave one life behind, the door to new opportunity opens up to us. The whole world is our oyster.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
