Recently I've been really into binge watching slam poems on YouTube and Tumblr. There's something about the expression of all these creative and important ideas, about the boldness and confidence and raw emotion that essentially oozes from all of these immensely talented people. These poets and their works are hugely inspirational and I often find myself quoting them in the back of my head when I need a laugh or a confidence boost or some words of wisdom. While I have dozens of favorite poems, here are some you need in your life right now.
1. Omar Holmon and Anthony Ragler-- "Open Letter to Black People in Horror Movies"
Brought into my life by one of my best friends--a brilliant, socially aware, and young biracial woman--this poem directly tackles modern race issues from an interesting but prevalent angle. Full of hilarity but also of deep and pressing truths, you'll be left sitting at the screen saying, "Well, damn."
2. Jesse Parent-- "To the Boys Who May One Day Date my Daughter"
As a loving and protective father, Jesse Parent offers a very clear warning to the young men who may one day be lucky enough to date the daughter he so deeply cares for. Jesse Parent is absolutely hilarious and heartfelt, playing on the stereotype of overprotective father while also emphasizing that he is protective for a very good reason and that reason is that he clearly adores his daughter. A++ parenting, Jesse Parent (see what I did there? Huh? huh?.....Moving on.)
3. Patrick Roche-- "Couples Therapy"
So I am convinced that Patrick Roche is one of the most precious and brilliant individuals to ever grace the planet. "Couples Therapy" tells the story of Patrick Roche's ongoing struggle with his depression which at some points seems to take on a life of its own. This is an amazing piece to relate to for anyone who has a mental illness, can relate to sadness, or can appreciate a damn good poem.
4. Desiree Dallagiacomo-- "Thighs"
Every time I listen to Desiree Dallagiacomo perform this amazing body-positive/anti-catcalling piece I feel a huge surge of confidence. Dallagiacomo's own confidence and enormous level of sass leap off the screen and breathe a huge personality into an already amazing poem. I love this poem so much I even performed part of it at an open mic night at my college--a huge accomplishment for someone with a lot of stage fright like myself.
5. Neil Hilborn-- "OCD"
In this intense and heartbreaking poem, Hilborn expertly connects with the audience through his own struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Hilborn's performance is raw and inspiring, promoting mental health awareness and relating to those with similar struggles. This is an all-time favorite of mine and my favorite of Neil Hllborn's poems.
6. Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye-- "When Love Arrives"
If you've ever looked into slam poetry it's more than likely you've run across the names Sarah Kay and Phil Kaye before. These best friends have amazing voices--both individually and together, weaving gorgeous metaphor with relatable storytelling. This poem is my favorite of their collaborations, infusing humor with heart as well as the lifelong struggle of figuring out when love arrives.
