I've been avoiding my life problems like an adult recently and in doing so I've watched two 22-episode seasons of a tv show in a week. You do the math. Thank you, Netflix, for sponsoring my escapism.
I've spent many a day and night glued to my laptop watching Netflix, as I'm sure many other college aged students have. You're lying if you haven't been offended when Netflix asked if you're still there. Before jumping into a new series I always get a little nervous. Am I ready to make a 5 season commitment? What if it isn't that good? Well, I always find out.
1. Sense8
Where do I even begin? Sense8 is about eight people who have an unlikely connection between them. It's a while before it's revealed but when it is, it's SO GOOD. It is so diverse and amazing and just flat out beautiful. I can't even tell you which of the eight are my favorite because they're all stunning human beings just working together to fight a big bad.
2. Marvel's Jessica Jones
Kristen Ritter stars in this Netflix original as Jessica Jones. She's a walking enigma, dark and ready to kick your ass. While she's technically a superhero, her interests aren't saving the world, but saving herself. She's fighting against her ex-boyfriend and villain, Kilgrave, who many of you will recognize as the 10th Doctor. Unfortunately we've just received news the 2nd season probably won't air until 2018. Luckily we have the show's spinoff, Luke Cage, to keep us company until then.
3. That 70s Show
We all know and love our six favorite idiots from the 70s. All eight seasons are available on Netflix for your binge watching pleasures. I remember when Netflix was only mail ordered DVDs and you had to watch That 70s Show reruns on FX every Friday night. If you don't scream "Hello Wisconsin!" at the end of each title sequence you're doing it wrong.
4. Grey's Anatomy
As far as medical dramas go, there are none like Greys Anatomy. This series is on its 13th season and shows no signs of slowing down. Seasons 1-12 are available on Netflix so you can catch up, but be careful. As a GA addict I've seen the series at least 3 times. Each time I try to binge watch it I look up and it's been three weeks and I still have five seasons to go. Also, don't get too attached to anyone. Show creator Shonda Rhimes likes to tear out hearts both on screen and in your chest cavity.
5. Stranger Things
Honestly Netflix has really outdone itself with Stranger Things. The Duffer brothers have created a thriller told in three perspectives: kid, teen, and adult. The three groups work together to solve the mystery of their missing friend, brother, and son. The show features incredible child actors that are redefining the field and friendship, and a story that's too difficult to sum up in a measly paragraph. Watch it and weep.
6. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
High key the greatest show ever made. Actually. It changed television! And academics cannot get enough of it. Its viewed as a literary work of fiction in many scholar's eyes. Don't let that fool you, this still is a cult classic that focuses on love, life, and kicking the big bad's butt. All seasons are available on Netflix. Joss Whedon has created many worlds to appease us but Buffy by far has been my favorite.
