We all know the classic romantic comedy scenes, the ones in which the man arrives just in time to tell the woman he loves her or plans some crazy event to win her back. These are the kind of scenes that, had normal people tried to attempt them, wouldn't have happened or would have completely backfired. Here are six romantic movie scenes rewritten realistically. Warning: There are spoilers.
1. "Sleepless in Seattle," the Empire State Building scene
If you've ever been up the Empire State Building, you know how painfully and absurdly long the line can be. The probability that at sunset Annie, Sam, and Jonah would be able to go up and down the elevator multiple times with no one there is basically nil in real life. If this weren't a movie, they would have both gotten stuck in the super long line and would have fallen in love waiting for ticket kiosk number 2.
2. "Friends With Benefits," the Grand Central Station scene
Rom-coms have a thing for iconic New York landmarks. If Jamie and Dylan's situation had happened to normal people, after calling her "seriously screwed up," the attempted flash-mob he created to remind her of the first time wouldn't have gone as planned. It would probably have gotten shut down by the NYPD, after some angry New York commuters screamed obscenities at them.
3. "She's All That," the "Kiss Me" scene
We all dream of having a boy show up at our house with a gorgeous dress and a glam squad to get us ready for our big date. But realistically, having your boyfriend's 12-year-old sister cut your hair with nail scissors is probably a bad idea. In real life, Marnie would have come down the stairs with uneven bangs and a badly layered bob. But the tripping down the stairs, that would have totally happened.
4. "The Prince and Me," the scene in Denmark
After Paige meets Eddie at the University of Wisconsin and discovers that he's really a prince, she travels to Denmark to try and find him. She arrives at exactly the right time to see him and his family in a parade, catches his attention, and they live happily ever after. In real life, she would have arrived on a normal day where the prince was in a heavily guarded palace, and she would have been turned away at the gate for being crazy. Also, why would the prince of Denmark move to Wisconsin?
5. "The Wedding Planner," the dumpster scene
All of us girls love our shoes, but not enough to get hit by a giant dumpster rolling down a San Francisco hill. In real life, Mary would have either left the shoe (if she was smart), or would have gotten hit by the dumpster and there would have been a really funny newspaper headline about it the next morning. Steve would have probably been too busy reading something on his smartphone to notice anything else going on.
6. "You've Got Mail," basically the entire movie
Nowadays, you only get emails from professors, bosses, and maybe your dad. Realistically, Kathleen would have met Joe on Tinder, and they would have iMessaged until Kathleen felt that he wasn't a serial killer and they finally meet in person. He wouldn't look anything like his photos, and the entire night would be full of awkward "get to know you' questions and none of the chemistry of "You've Got Mail."
