With the start of school looming around the corner, it's time to start thinking about how school is going to go this year. There is a lot of pressure: from your friends, your family, your teachers, and your peers. You worry about how well you'll do in your classes, and you wonder whether or not you'll go crazy this year.
But before you do all that, take the time to remember a few things.
1. Grades aren't everything.
While it's important to do well in school, it's not more important than staying sane. If you don't do your best on one test, it's not the end of the world. Even more, grades aren't always the most important thing you get in college; experience means a lot, too. So don't put yourself down for one or two bad grades, just promise yourself you'll try your best to do better next time.
2. Take some time for yourself.
Whether you're taking half an hour to watch TV or reading a few chapters of a book, make sure to spend time focusing only on yourself. The school year gets busy really quick, and it may be hard to find the time to relax. Even if it's just for a few minutes, it will help you feel calmer.
3. Don't give up.
No matter what, there will come a time during the semester where you'll want to just throw everything away and give up. It's okay to feel that way, but remember to be strong and work through it. Some good news: you won't be going through this alone. Chances are, someone else in one of your classes is going through the same situation.
4. Don't let a bad day get you down.
Everybody has a bad day now and then, and it's important to remember that it's just a day. You'll get past it, and continue on. Take a moment to acknowledge it, and move on with your day and with your life. Talk to someone about it, try to make the day better, and your mood will improve.
5. College is hard.
There's no denying it: college is hard. It's a simple fact of life that we all have to deal with. So if you're struggling with a class or just not doing as well as you think you should do, all you can do is try your best. It's not the end of the world to not have a perfect GPA.
6. Don't overburden yourself.
It's easy to get carried away with all the fun and exciting activities a new semester brings with it. But you have to think of your schedule and your sanity before agreeing to everything. We're all guilty of doing too much at one time, and then running around campus making ourselves crazy and exhausted. Before agreeing to something, take a moment to figure out how much you really want to participate in it.
