This one is for those people in long distance relationships and are making it work, and for the people sitting on the sideline doubting them.
Let me start by saying, if you EVER have the honor of falling in love with someone, do it. Fall and fall hard because it will forever shape you into the person you want to become. As you fall in love and the relationship continues on, you will face hardships, and the one I will give you hope for is long distance. It does work and here is why.
1. Skype/FaceTime
Skype and FaceTime are LIFESAVERS. It gives you the ability to see your special someone from miles and miles away. Trust me, this will come in handy. When you have had a hard day and you really need to be with the person who understands you the most, you will run to your phone. Now when their face appears on the screen, it is almost like they are actually there. It may not be as good as seeing them in person, but it comes in second place.
2. Communication
Communication is right up there with trust, which I will discuss later. Everything starts with telling your special someone everything. It should be like you are actually doing these things with them, so they don’t feel left out. Some of our sideline doubters, will tell you this is a big problem with long distance relationships, the other person feels like they aren’t a part of your life anymore. This is why keeping them up to date with activities, sending pictures, and texting are key aspects to long distance.
3. Trust
I know what you’re thinking, the “T” word. Trust is the most important thing in a relationship, period. Without trust, you can’t continue to move forward in a relationship. If you are constantly spending your days apart wondering what the other person is doing, who they are doing it with, and where they are doing it, then the relationship is already over. You have to trust your special someone 100 percent, in order to be miles and miles apart, but you can do it with the above aspect, communication.
4. Visits
Whenever you have a free weekend, going to visit or surprise them is the absolute best. If your special someone doesn’t know you are coming to see them, keep it that way. When they come out of class or out of their house and see you, they will fall in love with you all over again for several reasons. First, you wanted to see them as badly as they wanted to see you. Second, you cared enough to drive/fly miles and miles to surprise them. Third, the look in your eyes when you saw them, will remind them of the first time you saw each other. It is the element of surprise that keeps things exciting, even after years.
5. Songs
Pretty much every relationship picks a song that they think describes their relationship perfectly. This song will be played over and over again, day by day. This song will bring up the most amazing memories you guys spent together. This song will be a constant reminder of why you guys fell in love with each other in the first place. This song will save your relationship just when you think long distance is too hard. Play this song over and over again and never stop playing it.
6. Distance
Yes, I said it Distance. Distance is the main part of long-distance relationships, obviously, but it is the most important. A relationship that turns into a marriage happens through growth. A big part of growth is the ability to face hardships that seem unfaceable. Long-distance is a part that some see unfaceable but what they don’t see is that it makes a relationship so much stronger. You learn to be away from each other for days/weeks/months. You learn how to trust the other person more than ever. You learn how strong your love truly is for each other.
Here is to all the people on the sidelines saying long distance doesn’t work. Here is to all those people in long distance relationships making it work. If you are truly in love and every day you continue to fall in love, it is worth it. You can make it work; please do everything in your power to continue to make it work. I believe that falling in love is one of the strongest powers you have, and making long distance work is easy when you’re in love.
