We may all still think of libraries as places full of dusty books and severe librarians who shush you at every turn. Places that have no value to us as Millennials or even students. However, we've charged headfirst into the 21st century, and libraries have come with us. So, here are six reasons why libraries are still relevant and beloved.
1. Books, of course
I’m a huge bookworm and nothing makes me happier than opening a new book and sticking my face in it. That new book smell really gets me going! It makes me happy to know that every year, 184,000 new and revised books are published and public libraries endeavor to buy copies of all of them. Books are a little outlet from my everyday stress to another world and a chance for me to relive my favorite parts of childhood.
2. Research databases
I’m a college student on a budget. I can’t afford a subscription to a fancy internet database, but my friendly public library can! Plus, I get the added bonus of librarians who are specifically trained to help me find exactly what I’m looking for.
3. DVDs, CDs, and Freegal
I love getting free stuff. I can watch recent movies for free when I borrow them, download CDs, and use the Sony music database with 3 free songs per week. Did I mention that this is all free?
4. Programming
No, not computer programming. Most libraries run fun and informative programs for the general community—storytimes for babies and younger children, arts and crafts as well as visitors and themed programs for school-age kids. One really popular program at my community library is Sit, Stay, Read! where children can read a book to a therapy dog.
Of course, there are programs for teens that are often based around more sophisticated crafts or pop culture, some with free food. Adults can enjoy visiting writers, speakers, historians, and sometimes musicians. Regular programs are one of the most vital things about libraries.
5. Community resources
Often, libraries are the site of information about the community’s upcoming events. Many nonprofit organizations find that a library bulletin board or newsletter is the perfect place to advertise an upcoming free concert or fundraising event.
Also, many people use the library’s free internet connection and computers to search for jobs or increase their skills. for example, there are free computer skills programs run regularly at my library. Many kids choose to hang out at the library after school because it’s a safe place for them to spend time without spending money too.
6. Community becomes family
As a former library employee, I got to know some of the library regulars that would have been just faces in the crowd to me otherwise. I learned about their lives, experiences, and their likes and dislikes. My coworkers, too, became some of the most important people in my life next to my family members.
I think that libraries, as a place where people can come together for many different reasons, are some of the most vital assets to a community.
