As the weather grows colder and midterms take away your right to a good night's sleep, our immune systems also take a major blow. Being sick in college is never easy and sometimes you might feel as if your whole entire life is imploding on you. There is always an answer as to why being sick in college is the absolute worst and here's a couple reasons why.

1. You no longer have your mom to take care of you.

This is and always will be the primal number one reason as to why being sick in college is the absolute worst. You no longer have your mom to make you homemade soup, call you in sick for school, and provide you with endless home remedies for fighting the flu.

2. It is not easy to skip a day of school.

In high school getting sick was simple, your parents would call you in sick, your friends would send you the notes, and you would get two extra days to do your homework. In college that is simply not the case if you miss on simple day of class you run the risk of being sent behind in your work for weeks and professors are not always the most sympathetic in giving you extensions.

3. You automatically assume you are actually dying.

A simple cough or runny nose will become "life threatning" to you, as you are laying in your small bed covered in tissues accept the fact that you are actually slowly dying. All though it is a tad dramatic apart of us will always feel as if this virus is never ending.

4. You still try to hang out with friends despite your condition.

It's Friday night, you know your sick, and you know the repercussions of going out with friends, but you still chose to go. After blowing your nose till you feel like your head is going to explode, use overwhelming amounts of concealer to cover the bags under your eyes, you are ready to go. Unfortunately when the 10 o'clock hour hits you are hit by a wall of lethargy and find yourself falling asleep on your friends floor before 10:30.

5. You sleep all the time.

When I'm sick I sleep about half of the day which takes a major hit on my study hours and my social life. I miss out on more than half of the day and find myself struggling to keep track of everything.

6. It's expensive.

At home you have open access to a plethora of the things you need to get sick, but at college your parents are not there to pay for your medication and other necessities. So you scrounge for change hoping that it will be just enough to buy you a hot cup of generic chicken noodle soup.

Now being sick is never a fun task but being on your own makes it ten times harder, appreciate being at home while you can because it is definitely harder to do this on your own.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
