Let's just get one thing straight- I'm an old soul. I love to get up early (like before 6:30), be home by at least dark each night, and read for fun. Some of my favorite hobbies are spent with my family instead of my friends--actually, I don't have many friends other than my family. To be honest, one of my favorite old-soul things to do is watch the sun rise. Why?
1. Sunrises are, in my opinion, a sneak peek of Heaven.
Sunrises are beautiful- that's just it. There is nothing quite as pretty as a sunrise peeking through the trees on a crisp, cool morning. I imagine that the beauty of a sunrise is simply a demagnified version of the beauty of Heaven. There just isn't anything quite as pretty.
2. Sunrises signify new beginnings.
Are you overwhelmed? Are you discouraged? Are you just stressed out? Me too. However, at each sunrise, I am reminded that I have a second chance. Today is a new day. Yesterday has come and gone. It's time to take a breath, forget about the past, and tackle the day God has given. Each morning, I am reminded that my past mistakes have been forgotten. I've been granted a new beginning.
3. Sunrises energize me to face the day.
I don't know about you, but there is something energizing about the sun. After watching the sunrise I feel empowered to face the day and all of its struggles.
4. Sunrises are unique.
Have you ever noticed the individual quality of a sunset? Some days the sun rises amidst scattered clouds, some days it rises fully covered by clouds, and some days it rises without a cloud in sight. Every morning the sun finds a new way to make its entrance. Just like the sun, I have been created with abilities and characteristics different from anyone else. Even as a twin, I am unique. I bring a special value to this world that no one else can, and you do, too.
5. Sunrises are free.
As an accounting major, I know the value of a dollar. As a local in a tourist town, I know how expensive entertainment can be. $15 to watch a movie? $50 to ride go-carts? $20 to play one round of putt-putt? I'd much rather grab a chair and blanket, sit out on my back deck and watch the sun creep over the trees debt-free.
6. Sunrises are often overlooked.
Out of all the people in the world, who really gets up in the morning to watch the sun? Very few. The sunrise is overlooked, and I often feel this way. When life gets busy, stressful, and just plain hard it is easy to feel some sort of invisible. But the thing is- even though many people sleep right through the sunrise, a handful of people wake up. Even though you think no one cares or notices about you, someone does. Someone sees your beauty. Someone sees your greatness. You may be overlooked by the majority of the population, but you are important, worthy, and special to somebody.
There truly is something special about the sunrise and I'm thankful my old soul enjoys watching them all.
